Some questions: ipod to H/U?

Featured Replies

Just wondered for those of you who use an iPod hooked up to the car stereo - do you just plug into an Aux input jack or is there a real advantage to say an IP-bus input cable?

Also how do you mount your ipod to be able to control it? (or do you just plonk it on the passenger seat?)

Interested in learning, thanks

Bas

On my octy 2 with stream mp3 i made up a lead that went to the aux socket on the back of the stereo and put a write up on here on how to do it. The lead comes through the glove compartment and can then be hidden away in glove compartment when parked or not in use (to deter thieving scum from breaking in to look for ipod.). Sound quality is good but i have no info on the radio display or anything which i beleive if you spend another 90 quid you can get with a proper ipod kit (which doesnt bother me).

I run a proper ipod lead, which means that the ipod can be fully controlled by the touch screen HU. So the ipod lives in the glovebox until it needs syncing.

Another advantage of a proper ipod lead is that ipod will charge from it as well..

Just use the Aux socket.

guess I just need to experiment - "uncapping" the volume limit and adjusting the signal limit upwards has given it more oomph.

Leaving the iPod on the seat is not the greatest idea -slides around too much...

Thanks for all the opinions - may just use the Aux plug for now.

Hi Basil,

I use a fairly cheap vent type holder - there are a few pics of my install in http://briskoda.net/ice-security-insurance/connects2-ipod-adaptor-fabia-vrs-pics/134581/

I use a Connects2 lead so I can control (volume, play, FF etc) the Ipod from the head unit - with Discs 2 - 6 on the standard HU being linked to the first five playlists on the Ipod.

I can also (when stationary of course) still control from the Ipod itself - plus with both methods of control I can see what track is playing, together with album artwork where available.

I find my nano fits nicely in the cup holder on the octy and doesnt move about. if you want to have a go or use my guide to see if you can do anything with the fabia then my guide is here: http://briskoda.net/ice-security-insurance/installing-my-mp3-kit-today/90871/

If you do find away of making it work on the fabia I for one would be grateful if you could do a write up on that thread as it is a common question that springs up from time to time and i only have experience with the stream mp3 even through it shouldnt be to hard or difficult (well in theory).

Here's what I did in the Roomster Basil, Brodit do make powered mounts for ipod's as well as iphones. http://briskoda.net/roomster/latest-incarnation-bluetooth-iphone-ness-vroomster/136397/

In the Furby though, you have the secret flap in the glovebox, so I would be tempted to use a GROM adapter and plug it into the CD changer port on the symphony, then route the cable to the glovebox secret flap and hook it up to the ipod in the glovebox. The GROM will charge the ipod too

Bas - I'd go the 'proper' route and either use a link into the standard HU (Dension/Connects2) or go for something with full control. Alpine seem to do the best systems from 3rd parties IMO, like the X001 I bought.

But if you are going the 'AUX' route, couple it with a PocketDock. This will allow you to use a 3.5mm jack>jack cable, but utilise the proper iPod connection, which is amped, rather than plugging straight into the headphone socket. Because it's amped you won't have to wind the volume right up on the 'Pod, and the sound quality will be immeasurably better too. I use one with my hi-fi for listening to the iPod at home.

Are these GROM kits any good? I keep seeing them on eBay but have steered clear because they are usually so much cheaper than the connects2/Dension equivalent. I don't want to be a victim of false economy as i know the Dension stuff is usually top knotch. Also, where is this 'secret flap'? I have been put off doing a proper instillation so far as i didn't want to have to hack/drill the glovebox, an easy route would be very preferable.

The grom kits are fine mate, they treat the Ipod as a CD Changer allowing you to control it through the exisiting HU, there are a couple of members here using them and I had one fitted to the wifes old Polo and it was perfect.

The secret glovebox flap ........ I can't tell you ....... if I did, it wouldn't be secret ;)

(PS, it's only on mk1 furbies)

Ah right, figured it didn't exist. I looked for the same one on my Furby, used the hidden flap on my old Furby with a Sony HU and connects2 Ipod Kit. Its one thing i miss from the Grande Punto, had a USB socket in the glovebox for any mp3 player/storage device.

Also, for more oomph, there are 3 Aux settings. Aux 3 seems the highest and clearest in ours.

Now to figure how to get it out to Bahrain.....

Drop me a PM if I can help at all

Andy2407 - thanks for the offer mate - it's nice people like you that make Brisk the comfy place to hang out it is :)

Thanks to everyone for their advice

I think I've come up with a neat solution - hope to take some pics and post soon...

Cheers

where are they i cant find them?

When in Aux mode, IIRC it was on the r/h buttons as an option. Hit the button highlighted, and the next screen shows Aux 1-3 on the l/h buttons.

cheers i will look for it later.

Thanks again for all the info. Took a few tips from everyone above and came up with this fiddle:

Double sided 3M tape used to fix the iPod dock to the top of the ashtray - line out from it into the Pioneer Aux socket. Sounds MUCH better than using the headphone jack and I remove the iPod when not in use (keys to work are kept in the ashtray so I have to lift out the iPod to open the ashtray). Since I constantly fiddle with the music, the iPod should be fine just using its internal battery. Stealing from locked cars here in Bahrain is rare so it doesn't worry me about the dock being in plain view.
