I need to pick the brains of the experts on here. I had a remap done in early January and have been running it until today. The old surging after remap issue reared it’s head, but only between 3000 and 4000rpm and was more noticeable in 5th gear, less in 4th and only a small amount in 3rd. Apart from that niggle, the map was very good and has caused no other issues as a VAG COM scan showed today.

The bloke who did the remap, James at Chipboost- An introduction to Chip tuning and remapping - has been really good in terms of communication and advice. He also put another map on today, which made matters worse, so put the original factory map back on. The issue is now gone and the car is totally smooth. Other than the lack of get up and go, the car feels great (as it always did).

Why is this? What’s so good about the original map that can’t be recreated by a boffin with a laptop, but a bit more powerful? So many people have issues after a having the car fiddled with, that I would have thought an almost perfect map would have been created by now.

My car has only just 28000 miles on the clock, I’ve owned it since new and is in good health. What do you suggest?

The remap will have wound up the boost, which presumably has highlighted another issue which doesn't show at normal boost levels.

Maybe.

Not that I know anything :)

I'd try a different map. Different generic maps seem to suit different cars better sometimes.

APR and Revo do free trials on their generic maps.

Or just get a custom map tailor made to your engine, from a place like RS Tuning in Leeds.

As Rob said, remaps will increase the stress on various valves and engine parts to levels they are not subjected to on a normal car. So a valve or pipe that might fail in 50,000 miles on a normal car might for example fail in 30,000 with a remap.

I agree with bodge its possibly the map and also likely to be the n75 pulsing off and on boost due to the new map. I had a similar problem which was cured with a different map. Some cars will work fine with one map but try the same map on another and a problem occurs.

Confusius say "man who lose key to lover's flat get no nookie". ;)

As others, your remap was probably causing your N75 to pulse.

Many thanks for the replies. I reckon that the generic map wasn't to my particular car's liking, whereas it may have suited others. Curse the N75 valve....:(

As Bodge said, a custom map is the way to go, but the funds and time to get it done are limited. I guess I'll have to start saving.

Here is a perfect example of why not to get a generic map. Yes your car will feel more powerful with big boost/touque but the usuall low bhp that comes with this will not give you a balanced map.

High boost to get more bhp is not the way forward..........and no, boost does not = sex.

I can almost hear the generic map fans tapping away to tell me how good their maps are. Put it up against a properly mapped car and then tell me it's quick.

Confusius say " Delcac knows what he is talking about".

Also, having had a balanced custom map from IP on my old Octy vRS, I agree.

I know, I know. The lure of a remap was too strong and I didn't listen to the Masters on this forum. However, having now seen the light I will endeavour to follow the correct path of enlightenment and set things right.

By the way, Delcac does sit atop a mountain in a temple doesn't he? It's just that I now have the image of a wise (old?) master passing on knowlege to us lesser mortals.:P

No, not on a mountain top, just look to the sky, and you will see him sitting on the right hand of a well known icon.....LOL

Nobody is having a go, as its easy to be wise after the event, and with hind sight we would all be masters, but, at times we all go with our first thought, and despite what advice we read on the forum, we ignore it. We have all done it at sometime in our lives.

Go for a custom map from one of the known, respected and reputable tuners from the forum, and the problem should not show again.

Mine was done at Impossible and I cannot praise Mike enough for his efforts.

Skinnyman i live in driffield if you want to see how good a generic remap can be you are welcome to test my car. My dyno graph is on here somewhere. I personally don't see the point in paying a fortune for custom map on an essentially standard car. Yes if you had more mods.

Don't think I was offended, I didn't think anyone was saying 'Told you so'. I thought it was worth a go as the car is relatively young and low mileage compared to some of the folks who have had the issues on a higher mileage car.

Which generic map did you get then? I'm a bit wary now as the car has had two generic maps and varying degrees of the same problem. I'm worried that if I go down the same road again, then I'll be looking at another version of the same issue. If time allows, I'd take you up on the offer though.:D

I got the Ecu evolution one thats on the bay (was £99 postal remap), its actually a DNA map.

I had a map from this guy back in December 07 but it used to surge from low revs but eventually settle down also it wasn't the quickest map. I told him of my prob and in April '08 he changed supplier to DNA and put a new map on for me, now the car is so much smoother and pulls a lot harder.

My car is an '03 plate with 114000 miles.

Just a quick update. James at Chipboost has been really good about all this and had a third map done for me to try to cure the issues mentioned above.

The new map is a lot better and even though it's a slightly milder map, the car feels a lot happier and progress is much smoother, (but still rapid).

Top marks and a big thanks to James.

You can do it if you want ..........Perv boy

jus one thing on the APR trial and prob the REVO one. dont get them unless you know someone who can get round the encryption as no matter what the rep says they are encoded so only they can remap the ecu. the only way round it is take the ecu out and remove one of the chips, or by having a certain box that you plug in to the socket.

any remapping company with pro tools can get by the revo and apr code left after a trial. its easy but it does normally involve removing the ecu. there is a tool that can do it by obd as it ignores the encryption! its very handy

Performance Torque and RS Tuning say they can get round it no problem.

I checked with them both, as I've had the APR trial on mine.

These maps from Chipboost aren't anything to do with APR or REVO as far as I'm aware. I'm told they are written by a bloke in Austria. He seems to know what he's doing as this third map was tweaked for me to suit my car - a semi custom map. :D

so long as ur happy mate.

yea RS Tuning showed me it. It is a good bit of kit. reason I said what I did is that there is a lot of tuners out there that will come to you and from experience they dont generaly have the kit.

jus goin on experience here mate thats all,

just that I had the APR trial just to see what a sposed good map should be like and the first thing I asked was can anyone remap the car after?

yes was the reply its not coded.

got si from ccctech to do it and he couldnt read nor write to ecu.

jus a worning for ppl who might be unawares.
