Engine Cooling Fan doing it's own thing.

Featured Replies

Was sat in my room in camp today when all of a sudden car alarm went off. I thought this was strange but went out to check all was ok. Stopped the alarm however i couldn't re-arm it and to cut a long story short the battery was dead and i needed a jump start:mad:.

That started car ok and i thought all was fine. Changed FPCF (see other thread;)) and then went and parked up outside my room.

About 2 hours later i came out to find the Engine Cooling Fan spinning as if i had just driven at mach 5 for the past 2 hours (in other words spinning rather quickly:rolleyes:). How long it had been doing this i don't know. Anyhow it stopped as i unlocked the car and i popped the bonnet to see if i could see anything obviously wrong. Nothing looked out the ordinary no loose wires etc. I did i quick 2 mile drive to tesco then came back and parked up again. About 10-15 mins after parking up the fan came on again. Bear in mind that the engine hasn't had chance to get hot.

I did a search on here and see that people have had this prob before. I checked the fuse box in the engine bay and the Radiator Fan 10 Amp fuse (F38) is absolutley fine. There was a bit of water in the fuse box:mad: and i have now cleared this out. Pass as to how it got there. Hopefully this will solve it but knowing my luck it won't:mad:

Anyhow if it starts again, and it's now parked under my window and window is open which is not good in this weather:mad:, is there anything else that it could be? VCDS is showing no faults at all

UPDATE: It just started again around 30 mins after i'd locked the car. For now i have disabled the fan by removing the fuse. Will just have to replace and remove each time i get in/out of the car till a fault shows up and i can get it to the dealers. Unless of course anyone has any ideas as to what it could be

I've read several reports of a fault relay causing this (sorry, don't know anything more about which relay). It also happened with an Octy I had on test - the dealer had to come and rescue it with a battery pack.

I'm afraid i can't give much detail as i don't know it, but my car had it and it turned out to be water in an electrical component (could be a relay or similar) and it had corroded (in the 6wks since the car was made :o )

Dealer (eventually) found it, along with some goldfish, and commented on how the unit should really be sealed - and now, mine is!

The dealer was Savilles garage in Mustow Green (nr Kidderminster) and the guy who resolved it was 'Pete' i think - he's still there as far as i know and if you're lucky may be allowed to talk to him and see if he remembers the exact solution. > If you decide to contact them and speak to him, my car is a black octy vrs estate that has been in once or twice  - he even took it home for a night to resolve some of the more random probs, my name is Peter Anderson, dunno how he'll relate to me tho - by car or name...:P

MPM :)

Have come across two of these, both turned out to be water between the two parts of the fusebox. A bit of disassembly, drying out with a hairdryer and a spray with WD40 sorted them both.

Water in the e-box or a fault fan control unit (built into fan number 1).

Cheers lummox,

From what i can gather after speaking to Stu he thinks it's water as there are 2 un-related faults when running VCDS. So gonna try and get Fuse box in engine bay dried out and see if prob goes away.

Do you have any other ideas apart from a long drive or using a fan to dry stuff out? Will WD40 in Fuse Bos be safe or not?

Cheers

If you are leaving the car parked up you could take the lid off the E Box and let it 'breathe'.

Taking the ebox out is pretty easy. Will log a few fault codes but you can clear them.
