My son has just bought a Nissan Silvia (which is an import),to replace his terminaly rusty 200sx.The question is that it had a personal number plate which was removed when he bought it,and it now has an M registration on it.His old 200sx has a personal plate starting with N 200 will he be able to fit this?. N making the car appear newer,which is a not allowed.But the V5 states manufactured xx/2005,first registered xx/2008.Normally I would of thought that the first registered date is the one you cant put a reg newer than on,but are imports treated differently?

Could be worth a phone call to the DVLA to clarify that one.

You cannot make a car appear newer than it actually is. If the date of FIRST registration is after August 1995 then he can use the N reg plate. Otherwise not. Even with an import

and tap in your registration number and make, it will tell you the DVLA date of first registration...

Also note that the car you want to transfer from (in this case the 200sx) must have a current valid MOT certificate otherwise you cannot transfer the registration number.
