Tyre Rotation

Featured Replies

The Front tyres on my MkII vRS are now at 2mm and will be replaced shortly. My rear tyres are still at 6mm, so I want new ones on the rear and the old rear ones moved to the front.

But!! My rear tyres have the "inside edge" wear problem as discussed many times on this forum. Its not too bad at the moment, but I can feel a slight rumble on smooth roads.

Does anyone know if I move the rears to the front, what effect it will have on the wear of the tyre? Will it wear evenly like my OE fronts already have?

Thanks!!

You should be fine to move the rears to the front. It'll take a few hundred miles but the wear will even out.

Once you have your new rears and as the fronts will only have 6mm or less i.e about a third worn, they will naturally wear out in a third of the mileage you have done so far ... at which point you will scrap the fronts and fit a new pair to the rears ... which will be a third worn by then ... etc. If you see where I'm getting to.

If you really want to be super keen to keep even tyre wear, assuming you are getting a degree of 'sawtooth' wear on the rears, you should switch the rears left to right and vice versa (assuming they are not directional) every 4-5,000 miles.

PS> If your fronts are at 2mm you should replace them now; have you not notice how poor the grip is in recent weeks/ IMHO tyres should be replaced at 3mm - 2.5mm left; not let to wear down to the 1.6mm limit (particularly with a performance car).

Never tried the ervice -but JUST TYRES (Just Tyres, the UK's leading independent tyre specialists) used to fit tyreswith a minimum guarantee mileage , only stipulation was that you went back to them every so many thousandmiles to get tyres rotated -worth a look ???

I'd just buy four new ones and get the camber values checked on the rear. Job done.

I had exactly the same dilema as yourself about a month ago, front tyres were worn down and the rears were at 5mm with slight sawtoothing on the inside edge. All the tyres were originally Dunlop directional tyres, so I fitted new Goodyear Assymetrics to the rear axle, then put the sawtoothed Dunlops on the front of the car. I had the Dunlops turned round though so the sawtoothing was on the outside of the fronts, I also had 4 wheel laser alignment done to the new rear camber settings.

The car drives perfectly and doesn't rumble, also the front sawtoothing has now been worn away from the fronts.

Just to add, it's not worth scrimping when it comes to tyres. They're what keep you planted to the road.

I do agree, hence I am changing them. However I must say I haven't noticed much loss in performace/grip. Even in the snow last week I seemed to have a reasonable level of grip. However 90% of my driving is motorway and town driving.

I used them once before, when I had my previous vRS,in St Neots, Cambs. But they managed to put directional tyres on the wrong way round and damage the sills of the car by jacking it up in the wrong place. So I will be avoiding them! I know different depots will have different standards.

Excellent, just what I wanted to hear! Where did you get the 4 wheel laser alignment done? Did you feel a difference afterwards like others have had on here?

I have OE dunlops on mine, but I thought they were directional. I will check tomorrow as I might look a bit wierd inspecting my tyres at 11pm in my pj's! - My Friday nights used to be sooooo much better! - The joys of fatherhood!

That is a serious consideration, if I can get a good deal on 4

Might also be an opportunity to get away from Dunlops (they don't get many good reports on here and do seem to be very sensitive to rear camber).

Have a look for Verdestein Ultrac Sessantas or Michelin Pilots (expensive I know but the last).

I've decided to take the plunge and get the whole lot sorted in one go! 4 new Verdestein Ultrac Sessantas, 4 wheel laser alignment and rear camber adjusted.

Now I'm going to start searching for someone who might do the whole lot for me!

Anyone have any recommendations of someone in the Herts, Beds or Cambs area?

Supertyres in Welwyn Garden City will supply/fit the Ultrac Sessantas (I was told a while ago) or, personally, I use STS Tyre Proes in High Street, Stevenage Old Town for the fitting/alignment but you'll have to get the tyres from Elite Direct.Com - Performance And Budget Tyre Brands All At Low Prices
