VRS coolant leaking

Featured Replies

Hi all

My coolant is dissapearing daily after driving!!!!

It has not over-heated once and the temp guage stays in the middle when the car is warm. Having to top up each morning. What/where should I be checking?

TIA

Check the temperature sender, as it sits on a rubber o-ring.

If you remove the main engine cover, you can see it clipped into a black plastic pipe at the passenger end of the head. It's got a green plastic connector on it.

Other than that I'd say check all the hoses while the engine is hot and still running (so you can spot the leak before it evaporates), and maybe check the oil cooler on the filter housing.

Yeah, a bad fit on the temperature sender can cause you to lose coolant PDQ:

Then again, you should have white, salty-looking deposits around whatever area you're getting a leak of that magnitude from, so I'd just have a good poke about with a torch. Obviously there'll also be deposits from the salt in the roads around the radiator area, but anything like that further back ought to point to the source of your leak...

Update: It appears this problem only occurs when travelling at speed (i.e motorway driving). Not doing it around town/lower speeds.

Thoughts?

TIA :)

Can you see a leak/dampspot anywhere??? Failing that get someone with a block leak tester to check fumes off of expansion bottle...worst scenario is head gasket is on way out.

Phil

The first thing I'd do if there's not a reasonably obvious wet/salty/rust-coloured patch near something in the coolant circuit is replace the system pressure cap; it's not unknown for them to fail (based on other makes/models) and blow out coolant down the overflow line and out into the airstream beneath the car.
