How hard is it to fit an EGR replacement pipe?

Do you mean the pipework to the EGR or the EGR itself with an EGR by-pass such as the Allard one?

It's not difficult, but there are a few things to note. You will get a CEL light unless it is mapped out with VAG COM. The exhaust take off port that feeds the EGR has to be blanked off with a gasket with no hole in it (made from coke can).

Combustion temperatures will increase slightly, although short term damage unlikely, the engine was designed to use EGR, so long term there could be head or valve issues.

Insurance will need to know.
