Removing factory fit stereo.

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have an Octavia Classic 1.6 2002.

I recently bought it from a dealer, it came with a standard Radio Cassette Player and I would like to replace it with a CD Player.

Can someone advise me how best to remove the existing cassette player? How is the best way to slide it out? The facia of the player has two small, thin (about 8mm high), vertical slots on each side, are these there for a reason? I cant see any way to 'get at it'.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Graham.

The 2 thin slots are where the release keys slot in. Some have used old credit cards cut into strips to fit the slots and removed it that way. Push them in and they compress the spring clips either side and the radio should just slide out easily, fingers in tape slot usually makes a good gripping point.

If you pop into halfords or any other audio store for that matter, they should have the special tools to put in those slots. From memory, Halfords ones were £3 or so but I did need to file the ends down properly as they are made from cheap, pressed alloy, and not particularly accurate as a result.

Once the HU is out, pull the cables out the back and insert the new headunit. However, you need to be careful with the cable routing on aftermarket units as most have a significant number of additional cables out the back and space is already at a premium on the Octy. However, I wouldn't cut the plastic duct behind it to create more space as one member did on here IIRC as it looks to be part of the heater venting.

I used a broken in 2 junior hacksaw blade.

I cut mine out, it's just a frame to secure the stereo via the rubber bung at the back and the cubby box. Even without it there I get no movement from either of these and have loads of room to reach in and feed wires etc

Great advice, exactly what I needed.

Many thanks guys!

One other thing, there are speaker grills on the rear parcel shelf (the black plastic area on either side) but no speakers. I was thinking of adding extra speakers but couldnt see any speaker cable. Would I need to run new cable from the front or is the cable already there hiding somewhere, I just need to unearth it?

sony stereo keys fit in the slots a treat works well if you,ve bought a sony to fit in as you usually get the keys with it:thumbup:

hack saw blades for me aswell
