Brake probs sorted with RS brakes!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I posted a few months ago on my tdi eating brake discs!

And even Skoda could tell me what was wrong with it, unless i changed the discs and pads again and fitted new hubs!

So in the end i bit the bullet and put Rs front legs complete from a scrappies on.

The result is awesome, ive had an RS before, i had one back in spring 2001 but the brakes are really smooth and powerfull, just right for my chipped tdi.

I paid £180 for the front legs complete, the only thing i had to buy was pads, was that a good price?

Given that the 312mm caliper brackets alone are £100 from a dealers....

Thought perhaps it was a good buy!

When you say "legs" this doesn't include the suspension does it? :) I assume it was just the hubs, carriers, calipers, etc. :)

No it was the whole lot!

Front hubs, discs, calipers shock spring and top mount, the whole lot as taken from a car.

Just worried you are using vRS octy front suspension as it's not designed for the TDI. :) Probably be OK if you put the TDI springs in though.

Beat you to it, Matt! :P

did you fit the whole lot too? or just the hubs/calipers/carrier discs? fitting the rs shock and spring will have the wrong damping and weight rates for the tdi

Yeah i happy with spring and damping rates as i used to race a group N M3!

But i take it that the tdi unit is approx the same weight as the RS lump if it isnt then theres not much in it the car is fine with the RS damping and spring rates just a little lower.

The only time that would be an issue is if you put springs and dampers from say a bmw 318 on a 325 when the 1.8 is a four pot and the 325 is a 6 then theres is a lot of weight difference in the two.

But id say that most of the lumps used in the octavia are within a cetain weight bracket and theres not need to worry about spring or damping rates at all.

At the end of the day is a front wheel drive car and not designed to out perform a Porsche or a BMW!

fair enough, so long as your happy that's all that matters.

There's a fair weight difference between the 1.9 TDI and the 1.8T. :) Diesel has a cast iron block and the gearbox is beefier too I believe. If it feels OK then fine, but I would keep your eye on it due to the rating mismatch.

Keep my eye on it!!!

Nothings going to happen! if the dampers and springs can handle the weight frokm first fitting them to the car, nothings going to change.

Diesel has a cast iron block .

And the 1.8T is made of?.........

Infact lol isnt the 1.8t lump a cast bloack anyway! lol

wasnt too sure so i didnt say anything!

Just out of interest, and im not being funny or having a go but...

What makes you think that the RS shocks and springs arnt up to the job of a TDI?

Just curious as im sure your aware that the RS springs and damper rates will be more than that of a lesser Octavia, ie they will be stiffer which in fact would be more suited to a heavier front end/engine of the TDI, if infact that was the case!

I used to park beside a vRS, and it was set noticably lower.

Yeah it is lol

but the stiffer springs and the uprated dampers are ok, wouldnt want it any lower than it is tho

Plus a standard Octy sits like a range rover lol
