Octavia 2002 TDi Steering Clunk Noise!

Featured Replies

when stationary or moving, if i turn the steering wheel left OR right by 2 full turns or more (wheel does about 3 full turns i guess?) I get 2 clunks, about half a turn apart (identical whichever way i turn the wheel and happens 90% of the time).

so at 2.0 turn I get a loud clunk coming from the engine bay, and then again at 2.5 turns or something. They are loud enough for my GF with no mechanical knowledge to notice them, without any prompting from at all from me.

happens more when stationary / doing manoeuvres simply because not many corners require that level of steering.

they have come on just yesterday, it hasnt got progressively worse or anything.

otherwise, all is normal, brakes, clutch, suspension, pulling away etc no problems at all.

whats wrong ? twisted.gifshakehead.gif

Does the steering get heavier when it clunks?

Strut top bearing maybe. What you thinking Ken?

PAS pump. The description seems too predictable for top mounts to me. Of course, if it's not the PAS pump, then the steering won't weight up when it clunks.

steering is not heavy, different or loud. pump seems fine. nothing is abnormal apart from the clonk. the steering just makes the noise (from the engine bay somewhere) and carries on as normal, theres not even much / any feedback through the steering wheel.

could it be the springs? i know very little about suspension, theres so many bits its quite confusing!

I was going to suggest that maybe the springs have broken, but not sure that would generate a clunk.

Would be handy if you could jack the front end of the car up (so the front tyres are off the ground), then get someone to turn the wheel for you, while you hunt down the exact source of the noise.

If you can't do that, then I'd take it to a specialist or Skoda for an inspection.
