'Legal' short pressed plates?

Featured Replies

I'm on the look out for a pair of shortened pressed plates?

Does anyone know of a supplier as Dubmeister have stopped doing the short version, and i could also do with knowing the size of the plate as well.

I may even opt for a 'Legal' rear and illegal front but both must be short plates.

My plate will have 5 numbers/letters in

JAY MD 'front'

JA YMD ' rear'

not this actual combination and i would like 'GB' on the left.

Not used them myself, but maybe worth trying this site - Number Plates

I know there is a lot of legislation around number plates now....

.....so maybe its a house name plate that you really need ;)

AFAIK, Dubmeister are the only ones that do the legal pressed plates, but obviously they are full width. I have one on the back of my car, but I cannot use them for a front plate due to my off centre positioning.

Short plates arent legal.

I think they are as it doesn't state a plate has to be a certain width only the letters, spacing etc....has to be right.

ive got a 3/4 size one on the front of mine, with "irish" font, which is basically slightly slimmer letters which are spaced closer together, looks good

number plates are soon to be part of the MOT test, they are mentioned at the moment as part of it but not in as much detail as is soon to be the case

Short plates arent legal.

Rubbish.

There is no legal requirement for the length of the plate providing the spacing in between the letters is correct, its the correct font of lettering and is not miss spelt etc.

The document here explains the current rules.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf

It also goes on to mention "shorter" plates and under what conditions you can use them.

If you have a plate that follows the rules on the above link then I would expect it to be very difficult to have a short plate.

As the rules tell of how wide each character needs to be, space between characters, space between groups and margin space.

As someone else said, number plates are starting to be looked at a lot more harshly in MOTs.

What many people got away with before is suddenly going to be a fail.

From reading the above dvla document, the rules apply to character size and spacing, not how big the physical plate is.

So, if you have a short plate, for example, K1 ABC, then as long as your spacings between characters and your character sizings are correct then you could cut the plate a lot shorter than a regular plate, with no issues from the BIB or MOT testers.
