Loss of turbo accelerating uphill

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

New to these boards after experiencing the first problem with my Fabia I got last summer - I've had a look round and there seem to be a number of other posts covering a similar problem.

I've got an '02 reg Fabia Comfort 1.9tdi - Over the past few days on my way home from work as I have accelerated up a long hill in 3rd gear the revs suddenly drop and the turbo appears to give up - leaving me to limp my way up the rest of the hill - the turbo will then no longer work at all until i stop the car turn off/on the engine - then all seems fine again - i've just been out playing round going up hills and the same also happens in other gears - always as the revs approach around 2800-3000.

Have you any ideas a) whats wrong, and B) Whats the best way to go about getting it fixed (for as little as possible) - i'm ok at doing basic car repairs/maintenance etc. but am far from being an expert mechanic.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Alex

Well turbo obviosly works, so sounds more like the computer is shutting it down to protect itself, possibly overboosting? is the car chipped?

I would get it plugged in and any fault codes read, might just be a sensor fault or somthing else that controls the turbo.

I'm pretty sure it's not chipped - i've certainly not doing anything like that with it since I've had it and the dealer who sold it me said nothing about it being chipped. Is the best option for plugging it in simply a case of getting a cable of ebay?

Depends really, an ebay cable wont give you that much functionality and the real thing is not a bad investment IMHO.

However, you could always check the vagcom map on here and you may find a beer token or something like that will get you a free diagnostics ;)

I had the very same problem on my Seat Toledo 1.9tdi. Its a very well known problem in VAG cars . Something to do with a jammed dirty wastegate or dirty variable vanes or something. This happened the day after I bought the car so the lazy dealer just put a new turbo on it but I think it can be fixed.

Faulty/Clogged up & dirty Boost pressure sensor (Map Sensor)

leaking/split boost hose, Allowing overboost.

I would check for Boost leaks first & really get the codes read from the Ecu, Which will help diagnose,

But Defo start with the easy ones first, before you go down the Turbo/Vanes route Etc.

This has happened to me twice since owning the car (2 yrs, both times since remap done 18 months ago). Both times when red lining every gear. No fault codes so just the remap getting a little to frisky with the hardware.

Your problem does seem to warrant a full inspection from turbo to manifold.

I'd put a tenner on it being a sensor.
