Octavia VRS and Vulcan

Featured Replies

Two flying classics - the Vulcan is the one parked up at RAF Waddington, not the flying one, which I can't believe might be sold off to the Yanks :thumbdwn:

And who says it's difficult keeping a black car clean ?

I love the Vulcan, such an epic looking plane!

Me too. Didn't realise they were thinking of selling to the Yanks.:thumbdwn:

Thats a good place to sit on the thursday and friday before the airshow.

Mine's about that colour right now. It won't be this afternoon though.

I remember when i was about 11 yrs old. Went to RAF finningley open day. There was an item on the flying display programme that caught my attention. It was entitled - Vulcan Scramble.

Five vulcans all taking off at the same time, it was one of the most impressive things i have EVER seen. The display they gave was amazing and something that i feel priviliged to witness. Such a shame that now we have one flying it may go to the yanks.

awesome aeroplane. I'm at RAF Coningsby and was away in America when the vulcan came to the base last year. Gutted i missed it. If you like vulcans and anything to do with the falklands war, i recommend you read Vulcan 607. Amazing true story of the bombing of the falklands.

My late father used to take us to Finningley every year in those days, seeing the likes of the Lightning and Phantom, as well as the Vulcan Scramble, which was awesome. Don't get displays like that anymore, unfortunately - far too quiet these days !

Yes you are right there, even the Eurofighter is quiet. Used to love the phantom, lightning, buccaneer.

Remember at work once there was a flypast of aload of lightnings when they finally retired them, sure there was about 16 of them. Think we had a similar thing with Buccaneers too.

I am sure the ground beneath my feet actually shook during that vulcan scramble, would pay good money to see that again, my son would love it.

Went up there on my bike on Friday afternoon this year (2008), got nearly as good a display as the weekend, as a lot of the planes either turn up or practice on Friday.

Great looking pic! Could have washed the car mind! :P

Sorry - was a spur of the moment decision to go past it on the way to doing the weekly shop, and I didn't have a bucket and sponge handy :)

Still looks cleaner than my car :)

.

the Eurofighter is so quite when it takes off due to it only needing dry power to take off. If it uses the burners its a whole different story. :D

Oh definitely not quiet.

Great pics Hedge - you can almost feel the heat from those burners.

That was often the most impressive bit of some the displays - seeing the diamond patterns form in the afterburners.

Aren't I right in thinking the Vulcan got a significant sum of money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund?

If so I don't see how they can sell it to USA or have such dire financial problems.

When you put a Heritage bid in you have to show a viable business plan to show that whatever is being funded will exist for a set amount of time in the future and can be maintained.

I am involved on the fringes of a significant bid - £2.5M for a project and we have to prove we own the land involved or at least have access for 15 years, the rest of the funding has been agreed or will be agreed on receiving the lottery money, and all maintenance costs etc.are covered for 15 years as well. If we fail to meet these conditions then all or some of the lottery money will have to be returned.

Seems very wrong for UK citizens to fund this project by lottery money, donations and fund raising only for the yanks to come in take over - who gets the money they will pay for it?

Or is this just another 'we've only got enough money for another month' scare story that seems to be in the papers every month since last July.

a better place was the VIP tent inside the base during the airshow :D my mates dad got us in after the dinner when they had the exercise. that was epic! :D:thumbup:

if i remember correctly it flew saturday and we saw that whilst we were walking about the show. on sunday when we went in the vip suit place bit was the day when it aborted take of after it (proberly) fell apart or somthing  but we did have a nice drive by from it down the runway at about 45 degrees with its nose in the air whilst aborting. it was insainly loud even when he shut off!

and a day or two after i was on the train back from lincoln and saw it leaving waddo from a distance! a rather impressive plane!

Let's keep our fingers crossed that it will still be displaying this year - shame if all that money restoring it has come to nothing.

Especially as last year at Farnborough my 4 year old son decided he needed the loo so i missed it take off and half the display. I was livid!

Was just getting there on friday morning 2008 when the B52 flew right over the top of the car, now that WAS phooking loud!! It didn't do the display though, something about a row over who was paying for the fuel unless anyone knows any different?

A couple of lads and myself get the friday off every year to go down there. Booked it off this year already, see you down there:thumbup: look out for the blue octy L333 ***

Might see you there - weather permitting I'll be biking down on the Friday, sitting on the A15 roadside near the traffic lights.

Meanwhile, here's a pic of Lightning XM192 currently parked up at the Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre near Tattershall - oh the nostalgia ! Taken yesterday on the way to Boston.
