Power steering orange light of death!!!

Featured Replies

Dear all,

Recently, I was parked, turned my car on and the PAS orange light came on! The steering was impossible! Turned the car off and on again - and it was fine....for weeks!

Today, turned it on, it was on again - so thought off and on. Was fine for a bit but came on again. Now it's always on after driving for 20 seconds.

Bear in mind though, when I first turn it on and the light is off, it steers perfectly but then decides that it's not going to anymore.

Any ideas, or things I can check to fix this? I don't really want to shell out half a grand for a new PS pump if it's not necessary!

Many thanks

Jon

Check car battery first, PAS pump takes up to 60 AMPS so if battery not up to the job, PAS fails. Also check alternator sense wire is not broken at the gearbox plug, this causes poor charging of the battery.

After that, you need to have diagnostics done, as it could be the steering angle sensor, or the pump.

Moggy interesting that you should say this. My battery of late was not starting in the cold, so I had to keep jump-starting it! I thought it was at the end of it's life so put a new one in (around 3 weeks ago). Only had this problem since the battery change. That said this only started a week ago. Is it relevant? Obviously I bought a battery which was specced for a Fabia 1.4.

How do I access the gearbox plug?

Thanks

Did you have a 44ah battery fitted by chance?

Should be written on the top of the battery.

Lummox, here are my battery specs (bought the cheap Numax from Tayna)

Premium Car Battery

Voltage - 12V

Capacity - 60Ah

CCA(SAE) - 525A

Dimensions(mm)

242 x 175 x 175

3 years guarantee

Maybe the altenator is over charging? So far, looking thru the threads, it looks like either

- Faulty sensor

- Faulty pump

- Faulty altenator

I've never done anything with the reservoir either, should I?

Battery should be ok.

its going to need diagnosis then, a fault code check would be a start.

How? Is that a case of me throwing £50 in the nearest direction of a Skoda garage? :(

Unless yourself or a close member has VAGCOM.

Hmm, well I live in Bath (nr Bristol). Anyone? :)

hi, i need help, i have a skoda fabia 2002, today i turned on my vehicule and i see the power steering orange light. I use the vacom system, and try to clear all codes, but the light still here. i friend told me that the i have to check the angle sensor and the cables of this sensor to ECU. Some one Have any pics of these or can help me with this?

What faults remain?

I had this problem, needed a new PAS sensor. Steering worked sometimes then sometimes not, eventually it fully died.
