Split Boot

Featured Replies

Hi there,

was hoping for a bit of help - looked under the bonnet this morning and saw grease sprayed round - looks like this boot's split. Am i right in thinking this is the inner driveshaft boot? Is it a big job to replace / should I do both at the same time? Is this a different thing to the CV boot?

Cheers

you need to take the driveshaft off completely and split the shaft to change it i think, i just today started doing a 106 outer cv boot, had to split the shaft from the inner end.

i dont think its that hard a job

yep, it is the same thing as a cv boot, make sure you buy the correct one, the inner and outer boots are different, but they will fit either left or right side

you'll have to take he shaft out completely to change that, which means you will need to drain the gearbox oil first also... dont leave it like that too long as the joint could run dry and end up ruining a perfectly good joint, the boot itself should come with new grease too. tbh there is no need to change the one the other side unless it is split or perished, but by the time you've drained the gearbox oil out you may as well do both, the boots normally only cost about £5... the hardest part of that job would be splitting the track rod end joint from the hub/bearing carier, you will need new split pins for those too(they use a castlated nut), also to be on the safe side i'd get 2 new driveshaft nuts too, and also the nut/bolts that hold the bottom ball joint into the bearing carrier, these normally need to be drifted out which ruins the thread

:( Looks like i'll be finding a local mechanic this week then! How much do you reckon the total should be including parts?
