First service - A quick thanks to all here

Featured Replies

Just thought I would say a huge thanks to those who have passed on there knowledge in regards to servicing and tips that you have picked up.

I started yesterday by doing the valves but my back played up, and only had done the one

Started again today, this time doing things slower and being more kind to my back.

Only a couple of valves needed adjustment and now it sounds better than it did.

Replaced the rocker cover gasket and all seems ok.

After that, changed the spark plugs, Oil filter and the oil (Castrol Magnatec 15w-40) but the air filter not needed yet as that was changed when I got the car in October, so will save that till later.

So to those who have passed on tips, many thanks for making this first service a good one!

Glad to hear you got on ok!

How much did the oil set you back?

Going to change mine next week but not sure weather to go cheap on the oil or not!

The oil costs £21.99 for 4l from Halfords but I was lucky in the fact that I got it for free!

I do online surveys that pay me for my time. One of them I do pays in vouchers.

Knowing that I had the service to do, I chose Halfords vouchers and this saves me a packet!

I had already bought original Skoda oil filters off ebay as they were being sold cheap and the rest off Jorily.

Must admit that I must buy a 2l bottle to top up as the oil change takes 4.5l of oil.

Oil seems to be going up in price. Asda and Wilkinsons have upped the price of their cheapest (20w-50) to £6 a bottle from under £5.

IMO if you're willing to change the oil that bit more often cheap is fine, although the absolute cheapest (the supermarket 20w-50's) doesn't meet any oil specifications.

Halfords 15W/40 Part Synthetic Oil 5L from Halfords Price £18.99 doesn't seem a bad price considering this is for 5 litres - and 4 litres of the magnatec is £21.99 at Halfrauds.

After just filling up with Castrol GTX 10w-40 (because I found it cheap) I'm convinced 15w-40 is a better choice for these 1.3 engines. It's easier to read the level off the dipstick and has less of a tendency to find it's way to outside the engine :D

I just had mine serviced!! seems to run a bit quieter/smoother now.

New plugs, oil, air and oil filters at 51454 miles.

The plugs were Bosch super plugs replaced by Bosch Super 4 ones.

Using AC Delco 10w40 Semi-Synth price has gone up a little but well I like my Favorit

**I paid about £11 for 5L think I'm paying 12/13 now
