loud rattling noise when idling when engine warm

Featured Replies

hi can any1 help me, ive got a vrs mk1 and recently i have had this terrible the best i can explain as a rattle but only starts when the engines warm. but as soon as i put foot on accelarator n rev's up to 1500 it stops untill i take foot off, ive checked oil but its ok, can any1 help??

Whats your idle speed like? It may be a little low once warm causing excess vibration. Does the engine shudder when it's doing it or is it an internal noise?

Ian

with 198k on the clock it may well be top or bottom end bearings.

is it a rattle or a sort of 'clicking/ticking'? could be the carbon re-circ thingy (technical term there),

its more of a ticking/clickin noise when engine warm, but i have no loss in power its still very responsive. it idols at 800 when its warm and its an external noise but i can't locate were from it drives me insane, i brought some oil thats ment to loosen off any stuck valves but its not worked suprise suprise! it almost sounds like a diesal

Your description sounds very much like mine in an earlier post. Could it be this?

thanks for that mate yes it sounds similar but have to say the ticking clicking noise gets that loud that when i pull up at traffic lights the cars nxt to me have actually asked me is my car a diesel, and it seems to go away when i rev up2 1500 but then recurs when revs dropped

does it sound like summin loose, and it vibrates when the engines vibrating the most, and does it sound like metal against metal??

if so i had a prob with the vrs before and it was summin like that, and i was told that its quite common, the pipe coming down from the turbo to the intercooler, the metal one that runs down the side of the engine, it bolts to a bracket with a 10mm nut and rubber to stop vibration, on mine the 10mm nut came and so did the rubber wich aloud the pipe to hit the engine,

u can get to it through the drivers side wheel arch to see if its that

Mine sounds like a diesel nowadays, i.e. after that noise started occuring. I swear, a normal guy on the street would mistake it for one. And my sound also goes away when I rev it.

Not exhaust mounts is it?

thanks to every one i will try the metal pipe idea in the morning, being honest i went to skoda and spotted a technician as pulled up he commented on the noise so got free advise he told me its a tappit and a rocker noise, so i hinted if he'd do private work as skoda CHARGE £70 an hr, n he's going to take the cover off on sunday n have a look. fingers crossed it gets resolved,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The noise drives you insane doesn't it mate

It could be low oil pressure due to a partially blocked oil pick up pipe. The top end will lose pressure first which means that the hydraulic tappets will not work correctly. A camshaft setpoint fault is often logged when the oil pressure gets low. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Wouldn't that be louder when cold? I mean, I can tell when mine's getting within a couple of thousand of a service before the indicator starts, because it starts sounding slightly tappetty on a cold start.

problem solved the skoda machanic replaced 2tappets and fingers crossed it does seem to of done the trick, it only sounds bit tappetty for a second on the 1st cold start of day but been told it'll do that untill the oil picks up, all in all ecstatic it doesn't sound like a diesel anymore

Good news mate glad you got it sorted.

As per #14, that's perfectly normal, particularly when the weather's cold or the car's nearing a service.

Hi, I'm having the same or similar problem with my Skoda Octavia, 1.6 liter Petrol. Is your still silent now after a couple of months? It had nothing to do with the oil pressure going low or?

Also wondered which Mileage yours had got when the problem occured? Mine is from 2002 and has gone 75,800 Km so about 47 000 miles.

How much did your mechanic charge you for the spare parts? I called my nearest skoda garage who said they would charge £35 only to give a quote of the repair cost... Might just try my local garage instead...

Cheers,

Is the sound a really loud one that's sometimes difficult to stop and sounds like it'll eventually explode? Because mine's doing that .. and if you fixed it like that it might save some time on diagnosis...

Could be a snake coiled up amongst the turbo pipes that doesn't like it when you are not driving briskly.

Very easy to miss and more common than Skoda would have you believe.

have to agree with the above with that many miles :o
