Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi All

Been lurking on the forum for a while.

I bought an 08 reg VRS170 Estate back in January with MP3 Stream Radio and Jumbo Box.

I've gotten hold of a RNS-510 Columbus from ebay which has arrived this week. I've taken a dekko at the various posts on the subject and looked at VRStus website. However just a few questions to re-assure me before I swap the units over.

1. As I don't have an MFD2 previousley fitted will I need to tweak the unit using a CAN-BUS compatible VAG-COM?

2. If I need to tweak the unit, is there anyone in the Guildford area that may be able to help me do this?

3. The new unit doesn't appear to have any dvd disc with it, presumably I will need to get one from my dealer? And I assume I will need to purchase a map disc also?

Cheers

Albert

There are folks on here who are a lot more up on the Columbus than me, but here is my 10p worth!

1) Yes it should be properly set up with VAG COM (now called VCDS) or dealers VAS systems, however some have found that it will basically work (as a stereo) before you enable the CAN Gateway with the Nav settings. Some recon that they have managed to work the navi without coding it, so you might be lucky! But I think it's better to do it properly.

2) If you have a look on the forum there are VAG com users listed, i'm sure you will be able to find someone near to you who will offer to help.

3) The Columbus should have the maps already pre installed onto it's hard drive. But I guess it depends on what the seller tels you & where the unit came from as to what it has on there. It can have one of two maps, either Eastern or Western Europe! The latest version in the uk is the Western Europe V3, but rumours abound that the V4 maps should be out soon! However be warned they aren't cheap!

Stu's install is a superb reference for the install of a factory navi unit, and there are others who have done this and added their experience to the forum. I'm sure you shouldn't have many problems as you've clearly done your reading first!

Welcome to the Briskoda & enjoy!

I was the same as you and as already stated the unit will plug and play but will not display on the Maxidot (assuming you have it) on the dash. You will need VCDS to enable it to display on the Dash

2. If I need to tweak the unit, is there anyone in the Guildford area that may be able to help me do this?

I'm not in Guildford but if you fancy a trip to the coast this weekend I'm in Folkestone and can meet you and do it for you as i have VCDS.

It should have the Map already on it as previously stated. If not then yes you will need a DVD. These cost around £170 iirc.

Any probs gimme a shout/pm the guide on VRStu's website should suffice though as i used that to install mine

Hedge will be a likely candidate for VCDS in your location. A friendly chap who's not new to Columbus installation himself.
