Strange noise from front

Featured Replies

Octy Estate 1.9 TDI, only 27K miles,

Im all of a sudden experiencing a grating/screeching noise from the front, new tyres fitted 3 months ago & noise not there, does not sound like a wheel bearing either.

Noise most obcious between 50-60 mph, oh yeah its not engine or clutch/gearbox related as turning off engine noise still there.

Anyone else experienced this?.

I get this - or something similar.

Octy VRS 2.0TFSI 56k. New ditchfinders all round 3 weeks ago courtesy of the dealer when I bought the car. Started to notice increasing resonant grating noise from front. Starts at 20mph, pitch is constant, louder with increasing wheel speed, not related to RPM, present when coasting in neutral / engine off.

Stealers replaced rear brake discs / pads claiming they were warped. This stopped the squealing under braking (which was another problem) but did nothing for the noise. Told me wheel bearings were OK.

I've checked out other threads on road / tyre / engine noise. My tyre pressures are as per the guidelines with no abnormal wear.

My wife can't hear it, my dad can't hear it but I can and it's driving me insane! Could it be the diff / transmission / driveline? I'm thinking of getting an indie to check it out incase I'm falling foul of "warranty deafness".

Two months, two dealers, one telephone argument with Skoda UK and one unnecessary set of brake discs/pads later...

The flywheel (goosed), one CV joint and the center carrier bearing are being replaced under warranty.

THE NOISE WAS REAL.

@OP - hope your car is better.

Not super likely, but could it be a bit of gravel caught up in the brakes ? I had one in the rear brakes a while back and not only was it intermittent, but it really sounded like something caught up under the car was dragging on the road surface.

Check for small stone / gravel stuck between the disc and caliper/cover.

I had the same screeching noise and that was the problem. No lasting damage but it make my teeth vibrate!
