To tune or not to tune my engine?

Featured Replies

Hi

I am beginning to think if i should tune my engine, to make my car little bit more sleepier looking.

I am thinkings about either a turbo, or a compressor:

There is a danish company that makes compressor kits for the Polo AEE motor, it costs about 2900 Pounds, with VAT.

Køb Kitsæt til Polo 6N 1.6 DIY - Tilbud: 24.000,00 DKK,-

To this kit i think i would need these things also, camshaft, headgasket inlay to lower compression, either a extra fuel system, or a complete ECU, like MegaSquirt.

Is there any parts i would need also?

And if i should go with the turbo, what parts do you think i would need?

those rotrex centrifugal supechargers are quite good, but they are also very expensive for what they are, i seem to remember that they come supplied with a special fuel pressure regulator that ups the fuel pressure when it's under boost which kind of does away with the need for bigger injectors, also because it's not a positive displacement supercharger you should be able to get away with running a relatively high compression ratio. the standard compression ratio on the aee lump is 9.8:1 which i think would be ok.. don't bother with a lairy cam on a supercharged engine the standard one will be fine and will probably work better anyhow.. think of it like this, a longer duration cam holds the valves open for a longer period of time, so all that boost you've made goes straight out of the exhaust past the valves(remember sports cams always have a lot of valve overlap)

the weakest part of the vw engine is the conrods, they aren't really designed to deal with the extra load (and heat) of forced induction but unless you are going to go stupid then the standard ones should work ok..

fwiw i think £3k for a piddly little supercharger is too much, plus you would need to almost certainly move the radiator looking at the picture on that link, also i think you would need to loose your power steering too

I'd say Tom's said it all, and that the site has a mistranslation on it; the 160PS figure refers to the flywheel power of the installed powerplant, not the extra power from the supercharger.

I think you can get that sort of power from head, cam, twin 40s and a 4-1 manifold and sports system on a AEE.

Agreed... without the headache of forced induction!

Would probably yield a much more reliable engine that will happily rev away all day long!

But on the swing side of things you're loosing out on the coolness of having a supercharged felly!

Will an eaton charger from a mini or similar not squeeze onto this engine?

Phil

from experience i'd say that the n/a approach is just as expensive if you want it to be done right (and reliable:O)

an eaton charger from one of those bmw mini things is a good option, although they seem to be fetching a high price on the likes of ebay nowadays as the supply is drying up a little. a few brackets a bit of this and that... bish bash bosch done :D. the roots type blower will give you more kick in the pants too, power right from low down all the way up, the rotrex jobbie wil be like a supercharged engine with turbo lag, you have to keep them spinning fast to get much benefit from it...

p.s, if that kit can make 160 ponies i'll eat my hat, more like 115-120 i'd say

There is a fellow here in Denmark who got 160Horsepower from a Felly with the charger kit. Damn its fast.

does the gear box hold up well at 160HP?

does the gear box hold up well at 160HP?

For a short time probably... but wouldn't like to bet on its reliability in the long term...

Doubt the driveshaft splines or gearbox internals are up to that kind of power or the clutch for that matter!
