Broken Sump

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Just had the displeasure of seeing the road caked in oil after I came off a roundabout to be greeted by a huge back box sat in the road. It appears to have cracked the sump and partially ripped the plastic guard away. Nothing else appears to be damaged bar the splitter thats nicely bent and cracked. I've seen a few threads about this but would like your help please.

The car has been recovered by the AA, after a £102 fee. Now I have the car in the King's Lynn area but obviously can't drive it. My insurance excess is £250.

Any ideas as to the best (and most economical!) way to get this sorted please? I'll not be able to do the work myself. Do I tell the insurance? Is it worth a claim? Can I get the fee from the AA back?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Omission of information.

You should be able to get that fixed for less than £250, new sump is about £70.

Thanks Ross,

Rang a few places this morning, and a chap is coming to pick her up this afternoon. About £250 including a new filter, not bad considering the pick up too.

Thanks again,

Iain.

I share your pain, I did this to my Octavia on New Years day. Cost me a total of £312 because I had to have a new oil sensor and pipe which got totalled along with the sump.

I wish they were made of something better than aluminium:(

You mean like plate tin that rots through and goes porous?

:rofl: have you not seen what vw sumps are made of? i wouldn't call it aluminium, more like whatever carp they have lying around in the foundry... yep dead rat on the floor... that goes in too, and yes they are very porous...

you can get them off ebay for about £40 new

The current sumps seem to tear like coke cans,

I'm no expert on metals but they need to use something that dents instead of tears but is corrosion resistant too

What would also help in the case of the VW TDI's is not having the sump a gnats wang off of the ground, though I don't know how that would be avoidable either

Think fitting the protecotrs from the scout models as standard would be a good start!

it's not the material that causes the problem, it's the process in which they are made, the are die cast for cheapness, and castings don't bend they just crack, the old skool ones used to be made from a sheet of light guage steel which was pressed into shape on a brake press... there are a few of the older sumps that will retro-fit onto the newer engines if you look about in the scrapyards

I'd love to know, exactly what a metric equivalent of a gnats wang is  I've got vernier calipers and dial gauges, and not one mention of a gnats wang as a reference. :D

So I would have to guess at anywhere between 1 thou and not enough :D

Mumbles something about 'depends how much it's been lowered' ;) but worried about gnats wangs now

Now would that be a northern swamp gnat or a southern council estate one ( the southern one is substantially thicker ),but all have a deep dislike for accurate measuring kit ,like vampires and garlic :):) ( and PS - they're measured in olde worlde thous (of an inch))

I'm no good at maths (really bad) so I just use object based comparisons, I get by this way:D

A Gnats **** is a term I use to describe a very small distance between two objects, on the other hand I use double decker buses to describe how big a large object may be

I think I need to call learn direct and get rid of my maths gremlins:D
