One car or two?

Featured Replies

I posted this a short while ago on Pistonheads.com, but thought I'd see what the reaction was from the Briskoda people. Let's hypothetically say we have

We have two 53 plate cars but I have to admit it's the first time we've bought new.

If I had the 20K it would be a Westfield and a Fabia for me.

If I had

Having two lots of tax and insurance is a bit of a hassle.

Having one lot of tax and insurance is a bit of a hassle...having two doesn't make that much difference... :D

True!

In my case, having no drive and a second car 10 miles away is also a bit inconvenient. Oh, for a garage in my Northern style back to back terrace!!

(sorry, :offtopic: )

Back on track - personally I love the idea of having a classic car on the drive to play with at weekends, but a nice reliable car for everyday use.

Try having 4 !!!

I would look for an absulutely mint condition Senator 3.0 CDi 24V to go with a current Octavia L&K 130PD Estate with black leather and a Jabba remap. :)

Fabia VRS & Classic Mini with vtec conversion :D.

difficult choice.....though i think the insurance/fuel etc would mean that I'd only go for one car.......

Assuming I could afford to run one, I think it would run like this:

1. Ferrari 308 GTS/GTB

2. Porsche 944/924

3. BMW 5 Series Diesel Tourer.

4. Octavia TDI PD (with suspension & brake mods, alloys and a good remap from Jabba....)

5. Older Bentley..?

5. Older Bentley..?

Fuel costs would be horrendous!

A mate of mine used to work in a petrol station in Wilmslow a couple of years back, and one customer used to commute to Manchester - probably about 30 mile round trip a day.

Ferrari being the environmetalist's green car of choice, of course....... :D

Note the important caveat though "assuming I could afford to run it".....

We Briskodians are effective in reality, but we too can dream our dreams.......

Ferraris aren't too bad on economy (relatively speaking) as they don't weigh a lot.

I was referring to the Bentley...thirsty cars... :D

Ahh, I see how so many of you can afford to mod your Skodas, you've only got one car. What with my Golf GT TDI and Honda VFR800, SWMBO's Fabia vRS and her Yamaha Thundercat and my son's Toyota Celica GTFour ST205, it must be time to buy shares in an insurance company.....

Good point there, that's exactly it !

I don't have spouse or kids and I'm not a biker (yet) so I'm lucky, however..

Problem I have is whatever car I had I would have to mod it ! Here's my

Problem is' date=' the Octavia would have to have

. Uprated brakes[/quote']

Check....both the Golf and the VFR

. Uprated and lowered suspension

Check....Bilsteins on the Golf. Ohlins on the VFR

. Exhaust

Check....Yoshimura cans on the VFR and Thundercat. The Golf will need a Miltek soon.

. Decent ICE

No but the Golf and VFR share a Streetpilot III and Snooper S6R Neo.

Remap

Check....The Golf's been serial port remapped by Star Performance and the VFR has a K&N Power Commander.

The Fabia is a bit too new to have been molested as yet but let's not even think about all the Japanese tuning kit on the Celica. If it wasn't for vehicles we could probably afford one of those lifestyles I keep reading about...

Good checklist

lol A daft thought keeps coming into my head...

"why not buy a house :) "

... that's a whole different kettle of worms at the moment though, definately off topic, luckily work pays me to rent :)

it must be time to buy shares in an insurance company.....

Or just start your own ;)

Chris

Would love a 350Z but just out of that price range. Otherwise - could keep my current Octy (8k's worth two years ago) and buy many a nice 928 or maybe keep a tatty 928 and have something small and nimble like a Westfield for tracks with the 7.5k that'd be left over ... decisions, decisions :D

Edit: looks like 7.5k wouldn't buy a Westfield :(

If have a nice estate for the family and an old landrover for tinkering with at weekends :D

I commute to north acton from fareham everyday ( 200 mile round trip ) cost a fortune a week in fuel, my wife also travels around 50 - 100 miles a day. The goverment needs to reduce the tax on fuel not a 2.5% reduction on VAT to make a differance in household spending.:mad:

Wow! The Lazarus of all threads (although thanks for using the search rather than starting a new thread - no pleasing some people! :D ) Are those Aygo / C1 / 107 things produced in the UK - they'll be the only things we're allowed to buy if some people had their way, no doubt... ;)

If you have a garage get a proper toy like a caterham or similar, many of these cars lose very little value compared to mainstream cars.

Someone mentioned Ferrari?

20k does not buy a great Ferrari, F355 is the one to have at the lower end of Ferrari budget, but they have massive running costs in repairs etc...

Had a few VX220's, they are a great little go cart, down to a sensible price nowdays too, you can pick up a turbo for

3 year-old VW Phaeton V10 5.0 Diesel. That's an awful lot of car for
