Dunlop Sport SP01 - why such bad reviews?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Well after much research & wasting my time completely I went for another set of Dunlop SP01's for my Scout.

I can honestly say that I have been well impressed with my last set which has lasted me over 35k miles. They stick well in all weather & have put up with quite a bit of punishment.

Is it just me that thinks these are great tyres? It seems so, everywhere I look they seem to get poor reviews.

I have just had my fronts fitted for £230.00 all in & will get my rears done in a month or so.

Lets just say from what I've heard they are quite literally a "cracking" tyre.

There are many posts on here of people finding cracks all the way around the tyre at less than 4 years old and before they are worn out, such that they have had to replace the tyres.

Got the Dunlops Sport 01 as standard when I bought the SR180, not a bad tyre, dependable in the wet, bit noisy in the dry, and certainly not as sticky as the Toyo Proxes T1-R's I loved on my old Octy vRS.

Will go back to T1-R's when these Dunlops wear out. Also, T1-R's are also cheaper in 225/45/17 than the Dunlops. (Elite Tyres at Rainham)

Yes I read this too somewhere here, but I think its down to sitting around to much? Surely to have rubber on :P for anything longer 3.5 years is asking for trouble isn't it? Unless you are lucky enough to garage it every night.

Or am I talking bowlocks?

My daily driver had the cracking Dunlops on after 2 years, was glad when they were worn enough to justify getting some new tyres. Have to say was never impressed with the grip levels. Now got Toyo T1-Rs and more than happy.

Poor wet grip.

Frankly dangerous aquaplane resistance even in a car with traction control.

Signs of cracking at 18 months / 18k miles.

Ours cracked at about 18 months and 15,000 miles with stacks of tread left. Also there are better tyres out there for £230 all in for two (even if that was a "good price" they are still expensive compared to others). And finally the get bad reviews from most of the tyre testers as well...

So yep I think you are one of the few that rate them!

PS the above wasn't meant to sound snotty - I just don't rate the SP01's and have had bad experiences with Dunlops in the past so will not buy them again.

I scrapped mine after 6 months and 4000 miles. All 4 had cracked in the tread grooves. Didn't bother complaining because the tyres were rubbish from new anyway.

Got rid of mine as I couldn't stand the noise let alone anything else.....Goodyear Eagle F1 s are less than £100 per tyre

I think they are mediocre / average on my Scout in normal road conditions and well below average in snow and ice. Autosocks solved that problem though in the Alps.

The loaner Corsa I had last month had them on it, can't say I was impressed or scared by them, even during the snow. Adequate, but I wouldn't buy them.

I'm on a full set of Dunlop SportMaxx fitted, as now no longer allowed Michelins.

All i can say about them is 'Shocking'. :(

Grip isn't bad, but could be better, and isn't on par with the PS2's i ran previously.

They managed in the Snow well though...

all 4 cracked on mine after about 10,000 miles. changed them for F1's then falken 452's as the f1's started making funny noises!

the only problem i had with them was they wore out a bit quick.

They're rubbish in so many other ways that I think that's actually an advantage! ;)

I hate my Dunlops SP01's, The tyres are cracked all round on all 4 barely 3years old with 13k. They are noisy as hell, usless in the wet and not very confidence inspiring in the dry. They are going as soon as, I hate them.

I've had no reason to dislike my SP1 yet, but I think I'm going to try Nokian WR next, because I want an all-season tyre and they seem to be well-rated (including by cheezemonkhai, who has just fitted some!).

must admit i'm glad to get rid of mine the grip is ok i just didn't like the craking, a puncture has forced my hand and i've ordered 4 michelin's £590.56, ATS 30 % of all michelin's, ouch!!!

Dunlop SP01s on my Octy had cracks on sidewalls and on the inner treads of each tyre after just 10,000 miles and the fronts only lasted 19,000 miles. I didn't find the SPs provided good grip in the wet and so I replaced them with a set of Michelin Primacys which were better, they lasted 29,000 miles, but were expensive. I have just put a set of Kumho Ecstas on and so far they have been excellent in the poor weather conditions we have had in the past month. They were also £40 cheaper per tyre than the Michelins.
