1.6 felicia oil pump

Featured Replies

Hi there,

This is a bit of a follow on from a previous thread, but can anyone help with information on how to remove / change the oil pump on a T reg 1.6glxi felicia.

There is nothing that looks like the chain driven pump shown in the haynes manual and I am at a bit of a loss.

Any help greatfully received.

you need to remove the timing belt and then the bottom crankshaft pulley, also the sump has to come off...

note: the engine is upside down in this pic.. the oil pump is that whole aluminum casting, you can see the square slot in the top there, that's where the oil pick up pipe goes, and the circular hole next to it is is where the oil pressure relief valve is and there should be a core plug in there..

fyi it's a duocentric pump and it's driven directly off the nose of the crankshaft.

Cheers for that Tom,

That looks more familiar.

Im having problems with oil pressure and am not getting any oil flow to top end of engine.

I have changed the filter and oil and my next step was the pump - if theres a prv then that might be worth checking out as well?

Any other ideas

Thanks again. p.s do these pumps tend to come off easily (engine still in car)

or am I looking at a world of pain?

Cheers

Ben

the biggest balls-ache of that job is undoing the crankshaft pulley bolt, if you are doing it at home and done have access to impact tools then leave it well alone, of course if you get really stuck you can allways whip the sump off and jam a large socket in there to hold the crank while you undo the bolt.. but yes they will come off easily still in the car, but you must observe the upmost cleanliness working inside there, also make sure you get a new gasket for it too or it'll leak for ever more all over the belts. to be honest it's more likely to be a blocked pickup than the pump gone

the pressure relief valve wont stop oil getting to the top of the engine, i would strongly suggest leaving it well alone, essentially it's just a spring and a ball bearing anyhow, not much to go wrong in there...

ok, can i have a bit of background info, why do you think there is no oil pressure at the top? have you by chance changed the head gasket recently

Cheers Tom,

My home mechanic skills will probably allow me to take sump off again and remove oil pick up to check for blockage. the strainer 'felt' clean when i checked it previously - ran finger around over gauze - seemed ok.

from my knowledge of pumps, suction side of any non submerged pump is more problematic than generating pressure so hopefully could find that pipe is blocked internally. - did not appear to be bent but might compare to one in scrappy.

I dont have access to any special tools but it sounds like I just need to stop the crank shaft rotating to remove the sprocket bolt.

I have never taken off a cam belt before and haynes manual seems to suggest that there are marks in place to ensure correct orientation beween crank and cam shfts when replacing - is that really the case?.

If so, and I get belt back on and tension correctly, should everything work - sounds a bit simple?

Any special tips ?

Thanks again for your help

bottom pulley has a chamfered edge which lines up with the rib on the oil pump.

the fork in the timing belt tensioner backplate locates around one of the oil pump bolts

your cam pulley wont look like this, but you can clearly see the timing mark

you are right in saying all you have to do is stop the crank from rotating, but caution it is effing tight:D

as far as i can remember the only special tools you need is small torx sockets to undo the back cover of the oil pump

if you are in any doubt as to wether or not you are capable of doing this job then leave it well alone and get a pro to do it:)
