Steering Wheel Locks

Featured Replies

Please be gentle, I'm a bit new to this....

So, I've finally got myself a car is actually worth stealing and I'm finding myself getting a little worried about it.

Was looking at any security improvements I can make and come up with a couple of options

1 - Some sort of steering wheel lock

2 - CAT1 Alarm/Immobiliser upgrade

Are steering wheel locks worth the money any more? I remember that every other consumer program was showing how easy they were to remove a few years ago, but was wondering if they'd improved in recent years? Also, are there any that will actually help reduce my insurance premium?

Oh, and will they mark/scar the leather steering wheel on my Octy vRS?

Or am I better just saving my money and putting it towards an alarm/immobiliser upgrade?

Opinions please, Thanks.

I would just go with option 2, although most people ignore car alarms these days the extra immobiliser gives the potential thief something else to overcome.

Here is another tip, dont put any of the stickers that come with the alarm in the windows because you will be helping the thief by telling them what type of alarm you have. They can then go off and do some research or get on with the job at hand.

IMHO (;)) they are a very good visible deterrant, however, I would always get it in addition to a Clifford Concept alarm on any car worth stealing as it's just added peace of mind :) You'll be lucky to get any discount on insurance from making your car more secure, but you never know - may be something to negotiate with your insurer or ask them what their preferred security devices are? :)

If you do buy a steering wheel lock, make sure it's a decent one like the Disklok. There's no point in buying a

If you are after a good steering wheel lock the Autolock 3000 is fairly good. It's available in Argos and Halfords (who also do a licensed own brand version).

disklok is rated as one of the best on the market IIRC from a program i watched on this sort of thing but IMO you also need a decent alarm on a car nowadays.

i'm running a Sigma M32 as recommended by the installer for ease of use (you run the system off the factory keyfob) and the fact most of not all the police vRS' have the M32 fitted and Subaru now fit the M32 as standard to the impreza turbo. Sigma own Toad if you were wondering who they were and i cant fault the performance and fitting of the unit. you get a small keypad with the system that you can use to add extra functions into the system at later dates (extra cost options plus some standard features like anti hijack).

with this and the disklok on my car i dont feel worried parking it anywhere.

obviously if a thief wanted to take the car they would find a way eventually but with visible and audible deterrants it just makes things harder for them.

Thanks for all the replies.

After reading a few threads I managed to find after posting this, I think the first course of action is going to be a Disklok. Just need to collar an hour of my mates time to pop down to Costco and get it (I'm not a member).

Then an alarm...

The Sigma M32 is winning at the moment, I like the fact it works off the existing keyfob.

Has anyone got any pics of it installed as I'd like to see exactly what is visible in the cabin before I make my mind up.

Can anyone reccomend any decent fitters in the Midlands (Derby/Nottingham/Leciester) area?

The Clifford did look slightly better, but from prices I found on the net it's well out of my price range.

Cheers,

Jim

I've got the M30. Looking at the interior all you see is a flashing LED thing in the switch blank. The interior sensors are very small and mine are mounted at the top of the A pillar.
