Raiding a salvage Octy

Featured Replies

Hi All

Advice needed before i part with my hard earn cash.

Found a written off ex-plod Octy VRS in a local scrappers.

Have been over and checked it out and am looking to get some bits off it

The 2 passenger side wheels have lost an agrument with a brick wall so have offered to take the 2 goods ones plus the alloy spare from the boot which are all fine.

price will be £120 + VAT = £140

which seems reasonable (all be it one wheel short of a set!! :thumbdwn:)

Offered to sweeten the deal by taking the front brake set up as well

"ok £75 a side or £150 + VAT = £175"

total bill = £315

Having taken a closer look at the car, its been sat there a loooong time and the discs are more rust than anything else. Said i'd take just the calipers and carriers and source new pads n discs.

New price £290 all in + they might chuck in the least damaged wheel which they think is knackered but might be repairable

So after spending with the best part of 300 quid i'll still have to purchase new OEM discs, uprated pads, rubber for the wheels and FIND a fourth alloy!!!

Is my impatience pushing me down a long expensive slippery slope that could be avoided with a bit of waiting or should i just stop being a girl and take the plunge!!

take the calipers and carriers, leave the wheels and get a good set

isn't £150 a bit steep??

well they kinda go for 250ish or more iirc

£250 normally gets you those "delivery mile only" kits, including carriers, VGC discs and barely used pads. I would say even £100 is a bit steep for calipers and carriers, from a salvage car.

Sounds expensive to me for incomplete sets of parts

They are having a laugh at that price. :thumbdwn:

I paid a bit over £100 for a set of 312mm carrier/calipers/discs/pads the other week. I don't think £150 is all that steep when you consider you can buy OEM disc's and pads for less than £80 which still makes them a relativily cheap set and you don't need to paint the calipers & carriers either.
