Can you modify a newer engine to fit an estelle?

Featured Replies

basically the early 1.4 8 valve Fabia was a larger cc 136, you could look for one of them, then buy the parts off the Rapid to fit. Just check with someone that's done it as I am sure there was a catch, but it is possible to end up with a 1400 in the back.

No, it was poorly developed and is misunderstood. Most of the faults that caused head gasket failure have been identified and fixes are easily and cheaply available.....unfortunately they were not dev

The catch, as Ive mentioned already, is that you need to have the crank machined....assuming you dont mind doing that then its a straight swap as per my guide.

I didnt see the bit at the bottom of the post. I dont rate the felica elec dizzy, the old 136 is better made and has a better advance curve for a modified engine (you still need to mod the advance curve for comp use). The felica ones fly to bits at high rpm. You could mod a bosch unit to fit and the cap and rotor fit straight on. I use a lumi electronic set up on a 136 dizzy, the Saab v4 chopper kit fits.

engine ideas-

alfa boxer engines

subaru engines (250-300 bhp?)

t25 transporter gearboxes

There's a guy called Mark who comes to the Maidstone meets who has put a Felly engine in his Estelle and rallies it. It sounds very sweet and seems to go well. I don't know his Brisky id though so apologies mate if you've posted. I think he had to change the flywheel.

If you want to fit a 1.4 felicia engine you will have to change the crank shaft end because it was made to fit the vw gearbox so a different flywheel was used (i think a 6 stud). Once you do this you will need to replace the thermostat for and older version, sump from a rapid or 130,136,135 rear engined. You will have to use a flywheel that works with the starter motor, and you will possibly need a stronger starter from a later skoda. I´ve done the classic favorit conversion that is much easier than this, basically the same as the felicia bud no crank shaft end changing ( nightmare)

Those 2 sound like the best option

This forum never fails to amaze me......its a thread without a post for 2 years!!! Totally random :o

dont know if anyone has thought of this but when i used to have a rapid 135 ric it was upgraded with a fiat twin cam. not the best engine but it did make the thing fly (120mph+)and the only hard mod was sourcing a bellhouse adaptor plate everything else transplanted with the engine. the fiat engine is about the same weight but 1.6 liter and there was a 2.0 liter aswell but harder to find. there are still some of these engines around in working order. they are also carb and points so easy maintenance.

just a thought.

I must say that I agree with hawkeracing for once. The k series has lots of negative press but it is in fact a really bloody good engine, they are excellent for 7's and various other kit cars, and I never thought I'd here myself say this but I reckon a rover 25 could make a brilliant track racing car too with a high output n/a k series lump

.... a fiat twin cam. not the best engine but.....

I always thought the FIAT twin cam was a pretty good engine, at least in its day.

We had a couple of twin cam Fiat 132s when I was a youngun and they were pretty quick and never had any engine problems.

I remember back in the late 80's or early 90's 'Street Machine' Magazine put a 2ltr Fiat twin cam engine into a 136 rapid... boy was I envious (!)

They did a full article on how to.... they called it 'project bottle rocket' - anyone remember that? I might still have the magazine stashed somewhere... If I find it, I will scan and upload

Personally I would also look at a suzuki hyabusa motorcycle engine - 1.3ltr - plenty of BHP, lots of spares and tuning, a reversing gearbox is available - used for track days by many, and reliable too (provided you dont thrash it every day!)

Yeah, The K series engine goes in relatively easily.

This is mine with a 1.6 Kseries, running bike carbs and megajolt ignition

The fabia engine can be made to fit, but its not as easy as the felicia engines. The flywheel is totally different ( 6 bolt and closer to the block) amongst other differences.

Damn i wish the was a like button I could press for the above post... Did you fit that engine or did you buy the car like it? I'd be interested to see the methods used to mate the engine and gearbox, pics etc.

Did it myself, documented on the Skoda forum and Retro rides:

Done about a thousand miles in it, during the last month or so.No problems at all.

looking at putting a felicia into a rapid,

the guide posted earlier in this thread lists the flywheel/ring gear as a part to swap across.

I have looked at the felicia flywheel and compared it to the rapid one.

Apart from the ring gear and slightly different profile of the rear side of flywheel to engine mating face they look the same.

I have fitted up the rapid flywheel to the felicia block and it looks ok,(clearance and dimensions and has the correct rapid ring gear on it).

is the rapid flywheel able to straight swap across like this as it appears to be ?

if so this will save me having to heat and swap the rapid ring gear onto felica flywheel?

if not, why ?

thanks in advance.

Yes you can, thanks to those who replied

I dont think anyone did!

I built this engine for my estelle and sold it to Mark a 3 years ago. It did go really well.

Amazing conversion!!!!! Do you have spacer templates? My Rapid is locked away waiting for this day!!!!

Yep, send me your email address, and i'll send you a pdf drawing of the flywheel spacer / spigot bearing housing.

As a side note, I had it rolling roaded last weekend, @121 bhp / 120 ib/ft

right... im new to all this so forgive me if its a stupid question. if the estelle started life as a 1.3/mines a 1.2, surely you'd have to do somthing to the gearbox befor sticking a bigger engine in or wouldnt it just chew your gearbox to pieces??

Standard box can handle 120-130bhp and over 100lbs of torque....Kieran is running his k-series with 130bhp and 110lbs of torque without problem. He is pushing the envelope a little though.

how different is the skoda box to a early vw box as they look fairly similer?
