New turbo run in procedure

Featured Replies

Hi

When fitting a new turbo, what is the best running in procedure?

Eg just leave the engine running for 30 minutes?

Or is there NO running procedure (other than the usual letting it warm up before flooring it)? Eg just install and drive off?

Any comments appreciated!

Thanks.

there isn't really, just let the oil warm up before you boot it generally 5to 10 mins of driving after the water temp is up to normal. and when cooling down allow it to settle for a few minutes.

which is what you should do anyway isn't it!!?

It is important that you have a good oil supply to the turbo when refitting, this should be proved before starting for the first time.

If its a brand new unit or a remanufactured unit, then taking it easy for the first 500 miles or so. Maybe more. As my new turbo loosened up it got slightly more audiable, but not to the levels as it was before it went pop.

For the sake of £25-£30 you may aswell fit a new oil feed pipe, as it can become gunked up over time.

But as stated above, make sure the oil has got up to temperature before really giving it some beans.

You could unplug the injector loom from the side of the head and crank it over for say 30 seconds to get the oil pump to carry some oil through to it before starting the car - only on the initial start after fitting.

Haha. Guys, your meant to pump oil into the turbo before you start so no need to crank etc. We used a oil can instead of the peeny syringe I got with the turbo.

After that then just take it easy for a few mins, then it should be fine to do whatever. Mine was a stronger unit so I didnt give it long till I booted it
