oil in the foot well

Featured Replies

i told you in my into i had some questions! split up so its easy to answer for you all:)

when i picked up my fun at the garage when i bought it, they said it had been services, new gearbox oil etc

driving it up the road from london to fife, i discovered there was a small oil leek onto my left foot, further inspection showed that the foam pannel beind the dash to be soaked in oil

i think it is getting drawn up the speedo drive and running down the steering column and then dripping onto the footwell around the clutch pedal !

seems to have stoped but still a strong smell of gearbox oil when you get in the car:rolleyes:

They probably over filled the gear box oil. It's only supposed to be filled up to about 1cm off the bottom of the speedo drive gear (in most other boxes you fill with another hole until the oil comes out). Check the breather on top of the gear box is free to move up and down and clean though (it will be hidden under the clutch thing).

As for cleaning up the gear oil and getting rid of the smell can't help there sorry.

You might be able to take the carpet out and clean it. First removing the front seats - side trim, foot rest, console, handbrake & gear lever trim and un-clipping the carpet above the footwells. I would then try a carpet cleaner or something similar to clean it. I have done this in the past - only with the rear carpets though.

Yep... check the breather. If this is blocked then the oil will be forced up the middle of the speedo drive cable and then run down into the car!

But most likely cause is they've over-filled it if the gearbox oil has just been replaced.

Take it back and let them sort it out!

Phil

The easiest way of cleaning the oil out is with an aerosol can of brake cleaner. Squirt it on to the oil and then soak it up with paper towel. Repeat till it has all gon. ive done this many a time after getting in with oily boots
