Felicia rear brakes

Featured Replies

Took the Felicia in for an MOT and it failed on rear brake pipes, from flexi hose to backplate. So not bad just need to remove and get some made up.

But.......having freed off all of the couplings I have a problem with the bleed nipples, one has sheared off. What to do next, do I need a new brake cylinder that side as I will need to bleed when I renew pipes or can the one fitted be made good with a new nipple....Oh and how do you remove the cylinder, never had to do one before.

Might ask a garage to do, how much £'s do think for two new rear brake pipes as mentioned replaced + labour, time taken etc

No idea what a garage would charge, but rear brake cylinders are not expensive and are easy to replace - the only hard part (sometimes) is undoing the brake pipe union. I swear by Plus Gas (dismantling lubricant) sprayed on a couple of minutes before you apply the spanner. I think I paid about £10 last time I bought one.

Sorry double post read next one.

I did this job not so long ago as a complete newbie. You need to remove the drum and shoes first then the cylinder is held in by 2 5mm allen key bolts. I found these were a bugger to remove so replaced the backplates and the washers behind the 4 bolts, but if you have difficulty you could probably just as easily remove the back plate and drill the 2 allen key bolts off. The most difficult bit will probably be putting the shoes back in, particularly re-attaching the hand brake cable. I found hand brake cable spring pliers didn't help as much as expected but they are probably still worth getting. As for ONE new rear cylinder and ONE brake pipe I'd guess at £70. Pipes are relatively easy to make yourself. You need a roll of brake pipe (kunifer doesn't corrode but is slightly harder to work with than copper), some brake pipe unions, and a pipe flaring kit of which there are cheapies about at around £15

- the only hard part (sometimes) is undoing the brake pipe union.

If the pipe is scrap then cutting it so you can get a ring spanner over the union makes this easier too. Open ended spanners will always round off a rusted union and smack your knuckles on the chassis.

i think i fair price for both new pipes to be made would be about £40, the flexi ones are about £10 each

stupid thing to try

i would take a nail and a electric solder and atach the nail to the little bit inside, then twisted out

sound logical to me that this might work, but that just me (im silly most of the tyime with weird ideas)

Second recommendation for PlusGas dismantling lubricant, and I'd suggest buying a proper brake spanner the right size for the Felly. They look like ring spanners with a cutout to go over the pipe, and you really need them for tightening the unions.on some cars as well as loosening them.

Some Halfords have the 11/13mm open ended brake spanners in their bargain bins for £1. Saw plenty in Barry docks south wales store. 11mm is the size you need.

Yes!!! Don't go near a brake job without one of those.

Ok got all this sorted now. Easier fix than I thought it would be. Had to replace one rear brake cylinder, and managed to free up those two allen bolts ok (plus-gas) so just an easy slip in of the new one. Both brake pipes done £3.50 each, and bleed system.

New MOT last week, no problems.

Thanks all for advice.
