VRS Gearbox

Featured Replies

I dont know if everyones gearbox is like this or maybe its just mine.

its kinda hard to describe, but my gearstick doesnt return to the neutral position when its out of gear.

perviously i had a vauxhall corsa and peugeot 306 (hangs head in shame) and if i popped them out of gear the stick would always return to the middle of neutral position.

yet the VRS doesnt,

ive had the car nearly a year now, and its always done it, ive just never got round to asking

thanks in advance,

Sound's like the side to side shift adjustment is out, 2 cable's go to the shift linkage.

The one that operates the side to side movement is nearest the engine. easy enough job to adjust it.

It will be the knuckle on top of the gearbox. There are two pins which hold the cables in position on top of the gearbox.Take them out and there will be two half plastic collars which wrap around the pins. Clean out the knuckle holes with Emory cloth or something similar replace the collars and put the pins back in, they should slide in easily now.

I had the same problem with mine, i think the alloy type stuff corrodes and expands which traps the plastic collars around the pins.

dont suppose anyone has any photos? ive not long been in from boxing and im not feeling the love for thinking rite now

I had the same problem with my octy and it turned out to be the Knuckle on top of the gear box was just needing stripped and greased.

I removed the air box to gain easier access, pretty easy job as its only a couple of clips hold the thing in place.

will try and get some pics for you at the weekend if your still having trouble.

any pictures off anyone yet? or any other pointers?

This shows how it all fits together.

47 fits onto 49 in the pic. The plastic collars are number 48 and clip 20 holds it together.

i did have a look around the section but unfortunatly without success,

will give me something to do on my breaks (im on guard duty this week)

does the clip just slide off or is it a screwdriver/pliers jobbie

just top the inner part up and slide off, quite obvious when you get into it.

When you say it doesn't go back in neutral do you find it can sometimes stick in between neutral and try and pop back in gear? I've had that a couple of times but put it down to my dodgy gear shifts first thing in the morning but i've had the 'first gear' issue a couple of times too - was told that was the linkage.

no it doesnt try and go back into gear, it just sits wherever i leave it rather than springing to the middle of the neutral section

Definatly same problem as mine strip the selector down, clean and copper slip grease. Will be as good as new.

One thing to make sure thats its not your cables, easy way to test is to just un clip then from the gear selector on the box and give the stick a wiggle and it should return to "neutral position".

Right I've been out and stripped cleaned and greasedthe knuckle on my gearbox, it's still not returning to neutral though, should the knuckle be really tight into the bushes? Took me a bit of effort to wiggle it in. And I've given the stick a wiggle when the cables were disconnected and it returned to the centre,

i stripped the knuckle down again this afternoon, then micromeshed the knuckle down for about 10 minutes, then hammered loadsa grease on it.

porblem solved!!!!! my gearbox now returns to neutral for the 1st time since i owned it!!! (1 year in 4 days time!!!!!!:D)

thanks for the help everyone!
