arb and coilovers confusion.

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Basically I'm looking at lowering my mk1 octy vrs, and I would like to get it as low as possible on the standard 17's. I was going to drop it on AP coilovers but i have read on the site that these will only lower an extra 25mm from the standard vrs height. Is this true?

I have enquired about the AP's at awsom gti and the lady i spoke highly recommended the AP's but she said that, If I was going to drop it more than 30mm I would need an after market ARB to accommodate the drive shafts. I was also told to fit the ARB i would have to drop the sub frame. Again is this true? or can fitting the ARB be done quite easily?

Any Ideas much appreciated.

I think it's just the drop links that need to be changed to allow a greater drop but beware all your suspension geometry will go out and I personally would not recomend it.

No experience with AP's but KW coilovers will allow you to go MUCH lower then 30mm with the different droplinks to prevent the ARB making contact with the drivers side driveshaft. Again camber is not adjustable so I wouldn't go mad.

Hi Bob

I am so glad that you have come on here and asked the questions

As for a lady , I have not been called one of those for a long time ;)

Anyway , after I had put the phone down , I could of kicked myself

I gave you the wrong info :( I am so sorry

Manic day yesterday

But as the vRS , you do not get the issue with the drop on the front

As the ARB is fitted differently , you will not need the ARB

Lower quite a bit

Just do the coilovers and enjoy!!!

Yes AP`s are excellent and the quality is superb!!!

These are one of the fastest selling Manufacturer that we have come accross and all that have had them fitted , have praised them

Sarah

I know there's no factory camber (or castor) adjustment on the Octy 1.

How about using adjustable top mounts or eccentric bolts like H&R make to get camber adjustment?

Oh and o/t but I'd always call you a lady Sarah. make your own mind up about whether that's because you're a lady or because I try to be a gentleman! ;)

This might sound like a stupid question but dose it really matter if the camber is off slightly off? or will it be way off? I'm aiming for about 50mm drop.

The change may or may not matter. There's a range of "allowable camber settings" in the manufacturer's specifications, and depending on where your car is you might just go from the positive to the negative limit, or you might go well outside the negative limit.

Even if you do, the main effect of excess negative camber is to increase wear on the inside shoulders of the tyres.

I'll leave the question of camber adjuster bolts for Sarah (and/or you) to research when there's time, because she's got better access to people who'll know more about the practicalities etc of using them.

:D Yes.
