Estelle and Rapid speedometer accuracy

Featured Replies

Has anybody here compared their Estelle or Rapid speedo to a sat nav system? I am interested to know whether the speedo is accurate in our Skodas, but have no way of checking. At 30MPH on the dial I am at exactly the same speed as traffic also doing 30, but what about higher speeds? On my Rapid with the rectangular dial set I think it was very optomistic and perhaps the round dials are better, but I am only guessing here.

So, tell me what you know.

Thanks, TH

PMSL... bloody awful I think, when I picked mine up my Dad followed me home in his Jag to make sure I made it... he asked how it drove I said great, stuck to a nice steady 80 all the way home and he laughed and told me I'd stuck at a nice steady 65...

I owned 4 Estelles and checked the speedo in all of them on the motorway (the 0.1km markers on UK motorways are pretty accurate and can be used for speed checking on a deserted stretch). I don't recall the figures but the speedos weren't very good. However the rev counter was much better, so I just memorised the correlation between revs in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears and used that to calculate real speed.

Bear in mind that most speedos on European cars over-read slightly by design anyway.

I have 2 speedos and one is way more accurate than the other. Unfortunately at the moment I have the mahoooosively inaccurate one in the car. I use it as a vague indicator of whats happening, a bit like telling the weather by seeing if the cows are lying down or standing up!!!

It shows 60mph when in reality I am doing about 40 and gets worse. I can get the car off the (110mph) speedo by doing about 75.

I put my Rapid on the tacho rollers at work, and at 60 on the rollers, the speedo showed about 67
