spotlight wiring help

Featured Replies

Mine's a Fabia '04 1.9tdi Comfort. I'd like to fit auxilliary driving lamps (spotlights) that I can switch to come on (or not) when main beam is selected. I'm wondering if my Comfort has any loom already in place to do that (I see blank switch panels on the dash). Any suggestions please where I can find step by step instructions suitable for use by a five-thumb OAP? Many thanks. PS rear washer threads have been invaluable to me, thanks. (What stupid place to put the pipe joint - mine was spraying the rear lighting connection block over the rear wheel arch!)

Best way to go about installing new lights is to leave the original wiring alone and hook up a relay to the battery.

You usually get wiring instructions with the halfords relay kit, but you will need to take feed from battery to relay somewhere in engine bay, and run wires from the engine bay to the cabin (and to the blank switches on the dash if you want)

That way you aren't putting any extra strain on the original wiring, and spots drain quite a bit of power!

Their is a grommit behind the glove box where you can feed a couple of small cables through if you want.

there is a chance you will leave them switched on , or knock the switch ,which will drain the battery. It is better to supply the relay coil from a 12 volt supply which goes off when the ignition key is removed. You could still fit a relay which has a contact connected to the battery all the time, and get the on/off switch wire (which will pull the relay coil in) supplied from a ignition switched supply. That way there is only a small current say 1/2 amp in the switch circuit, and the larger spotlight current say 15 amp coming directly from the battery. The only snag is that if the relay contacts weld themselves together ,high battery current will flow all the time. I would also fit a fuse in this higher current circuit to protect the wiring.

Put the relay in the headlight wireing loom, and use it as a switch, so when full beam goes on, it flicks the relay and you have battery to spots connected.

Piece of Pee.
