PDTDI oil

Featured Replies

Just collected my 10 month old Fabia 3 1.9TDI from my nearest Skoda dealers ( 20 miles) after its 20000 mile service and noticed that the invoice shows they used Castrol Magnatec oil. I thought this oil is only VW 505.00 and not VW 505.01 as required according to the owners handbook.

Any one know if Magnatec is OK to use in PD engines or should I go back to the dealer and have them fob me off by saying the mechanic entered the wrong oil on the service chit but he has actually put 505.01 in?

Unless the spec of Magnatec has changed in the last couple of months, it is not right for the PD engines, it has no extreme pressure additive. The camshaft requires this additive to prevent it being torn to bits in a short time by the heel of the injector pump pad which pressurises the fuel. Go back and get them to tell you why they are using Magnatec then ask them to change it.

It's on the standard 10K service- I was told that I could not have it on variable when I placed the original order.

Just checked the 10k invoice and that also states Castrol Magnatec was used.

The other thing which I found out today about this dealer is that they also have a Mazda franchise and take all the Skoda's to their Mazda service dept, about half a mile from the Skoda showroom, for any service etc. How do I know that it is a Skoda trained mechanic that has worked on my car rather than a Mazda one?

You could get really lucky and get a person who is both.

Hello

Don't be fobbed off by the mechanics possible error !!

Contact another Skoda dealer and ask to what grade of oil should be used.

I have a 2005 Fabia VRS 130PD the engine oil is fully synthetic (not mineral) 5W 40 with a VW 505.01 spec, readily available from "Halfords" their own brand oil.

Check the grade of oil, not so much the brand.

Good luck.

Personally I've always tried to steer clear of magnatec, since someone told me it can do more harm than good. The garage that serviced mine put in Shell helix 10W40, which I have been assured is specific for the high pressures involved.

Magnatec is not VW505.01 so dont listen to them and get it changed for something that is VW505.01 approved, there is some here VW - Engine Oil - 505.01

You may be interested in the reply that I got from Skoda UK Customer Service dept -

'I have verified your details with our Technical Support Team and I can confirm that xxxxxxx have used the correct oil throughout. There are three standards of oil which are suitable for your Fabia 3: 507 00, which is a premium oil, or 505 00 and 505 01, both of which are suitable.'

That's not what it says in my handbook!!!!!

But that's not right if you have the PD engine as VW state that 505.00 is not suitable for the PD engine. It is for the non-PD engine

Well Skoda asked for the registration number and the VIN number before they came back with their words of wisdom.

I have filed copies of their e-mail safely away so that if I do have problems they cannot say I did not tell them I suspected a dealer had put the wrong oil in it.

Very curious, maybe it's a TDi non PD

If it's a Fabia II 1.9 it will be a PD and it even says in the manual that 505.00 is not up to spec

That's correct, 505.00 is not up to spec for a PD engine, its VW505.01 or VW507.00 these days

hi i am a skoda tech you need to get pd oil in your car we now fit long life oil to most pd engines as its cheaper than pd oil.

Servicing Plans : Owners : Volkswagen UK

Contained in the above link is a VW / Castrol PDF file on suitability of oils, but the key statement is as follows:

"With the introduction of new emission limits for passenger cars in 2005 requiring the fitment of exhaust gas after-treatment devices, Volkswagen have upgraded their LongLife specifications to 504 00 for petrol and 507 00 for diesel".

Yes 507.00 is longlife PD oil suitable for DPF's

Use this and it's bound to be the right oil

What's your chassis number?

i'll check to see if you have a PD engine

For the PD engines the approved Shell oils are:

Shell Helix Diesel Plus VA 5w-40 or 5w-30 (505.01) or Shell Helix Ultra VX 5w-30 (507.00 504.00)

Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 (505.00) is a semi synthetic oil that's not suitable for PD engines
