Air con not cooling!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone ! I’m having a major prob with my 2005 Fabia’s A/C. :thumbdwn:

Apparently is losing gas. I’ve checked with a tech all visible parts for leaks (not the evaporator cause is the most difficult place to check), and no go. There isn’t any weird smells that usually indicate corroded/leaky evap. They charged it and the compressor started to make a noise like if it was overcharged or forced, so the guy purged it till it stop making the noise.

The H press is around 200 and 225 and the L around 40. When the system started failing I could hear the expansion valve intermittently opening and closing (that “whistling/misting” sound), so I pointed the tech that and he manually adjusted the expansion valve with an Allen key and it cooled more after that.

During daytime the a/c feels like it’s doing nothing (even under a shadow or roof), it cools around 25 to 27 tops. During night-time is another story, I can feel it cools a lot more, around 22 to 24°C. Also, the outside temperature sensor is acting funny, I took it out and clean it and nothing, still reports crazy-high temps around 38 - 40 +. If I change the temp on the knob, from 18°C to the center, theres no change AT ALL in the temp.

I recently ordered a VAG-COM KKL cable so I can download some diag codes cause I know that crucial to pinpoint the issue, but is gonna take like a couple of weeks more cause Im in Panama and the cable is in Hong Kong. :P

Any ideas with my scenario? :holmes:

Thanks guys!

Air Con will not work with a faulty external temperature sensor.

And take note, the outside temp sensor for the aircon (readout in the Climatronic control panel, if fitted) is not the same as the one for the trip computer and engine ambient temperature (readout in clock display).

The Fabia never had an internal temperature display like the Octavia. We could only dream of such luxaries.

The sensor that I took out and cleaned was the one in the front of the car, behind the left fog light Part No. "1J0 919 379 A" which consists in a cheap thermistor built inside a little plastic "bean". I can check its readout in the trip computer window. My car is a Classic and it doesnt have fancy internal temperature gauges, just OAT :P

ap0gee: Ive seen your pictured guide a lot of times and Im thinking about doing that as well. I quoted the sensor (6q0 907 543 D) for around US$25.13 incl. tax (thats about 17.25 quid inc. VAT). Is there a way I can test the sensor with a multimeter or simple circuit?

Thing that keeps me thinking is the expansion valve behavior and that it loses gas with time.

Thanks for ur quick replies guys!

Oh... Something else, does anyone knows if the sensor (4B0 820 539 ) in the picture is a known cause of faulty cooling? :)

I think what Ken said just applies to Octavias - as for the sensor you show, I've had most of the electronics for the Fabia's air con out (see here also), and I don't remember coming across it - are you sure it's for the Fabia? I can only find reference for it against the Passat and the A4 / A6???

I may have been wrong about there even being 2 sensors on the Furbie; if I wasn't, the one you want is in the ventilation intake plenum chamber, not the LHF corner.

Check my screenshots ... both are matching with my engine (AZQ) and my VIN

For Etka is 35B and the service manual is 8...

Edit: Something else, Im in Central America, ergo my wheel is left, prolly that has something to do :)

Thanks again for your replys! :gapteeth:

Sorry to double-post :P

Had to post the pics of my OAT sensor, just to make sure we´re on the same page

Well, you learn a new thing every day! I thought the sensors were limited to the outside one (post #10 shows the correct thing, by the way), and the one in the control panel itself. It seems from post #9 that you've got access to better information that we have, though, so all I can recommend is getting a scan done, which should point to that sensor if that's what's broken. If you get no fault codes and you've tried everything else, then you might end up having to replace it anyway. That's all a garage would do under the circumstances...

I hope you find the solution soon!

I'd thought there would be 2 sensors because that was easier than having 2 separate designs of EMS and air-con MS when the rest of the car was common.

Yup! Will have my scan done soon. My cable should be arriving this week, if not, I´ll take it to the shop that has the VAG-COM. I think I´ll be replacing the evap. sensor cause it takes a while for the A/C to start cooling when I start the car.. AND the expansion valve ...

Anyways I will be posting any upcoming errors and/or codes :)

Thnx again!

Hi again!

Got my cable and ran some diags to my car. Got no errors under the AC controller but got one under the engine ( I think is unrelated to the A/C, cause has to do with the VSS),

16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor: Implausible Signal

P0501 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Readiness: 0010 0001

I also tried to run the diags under a 2006 Octy (to compare the behaviour and have an idea of the temps) but Vag-Com wasnt able to find the Air/con controller

Anyhow, I took some screenshots of the A/C controller in action. I tried to search the forum for the normal parameters of the temperature sensors, but I had no luck.

The tests were done under a roofed-parking, my A/C sucks if Im in a classic traffic jam under the sun with an Outside Air Temp of around 32 to 34°C.

If anyone sees sumting wrong, lemme know ! :P

Oh! P.S . Im attaching an Excel log file, made while taking the screenshots

Thanks !

Unless you have the Hex+Can cable you will not get anywhere with a 2006 octy as the interface is different although the connection is the same.

Hey feller,

where did you get the diagrams? I need this kind of thing for a BLT vrs as I need to find the drains for the AC. I can't quite make out the text on your post, even when enlarged.

Do you have them or can you tell me where to find them???

Cheers for any assistance!

Send me a PM with ur VIN and engine type ( model and date too I guess), and the exact part that you need to see so I can send it to you if possible :)

cheers.

Hello everyone again,

Just to post a quick update on the status of the a/c (yeah, like 7 months later lol).:P

I ended replacing the whole evap with a new expansion valve and the filter filling (silica/silicia). Also the vacuum, oil and gas charge. The grand total was $300 (about 190 GBP) parts + lab. + tax/vat inc :) [ is it cheaper or more expensive in Europe? )

These things need to be done when you live in a country with 90% relative humidity and 33C temps during daytime (and traffic jams)

Anyways, here are some pics of the destruction process of my furby

It was extremely painful to watch this going :( but it had to be done!! At the end the computer came up with: 01317 - Control Module in Instrument Cluster (J285)

79-00 - Please Check Fault Codes (under HVAC Controller) + EPS light on, which was resolved by reattaching the cables/harness behind the A/C controls in the center console.

Cheers!
