Had wheel bearing done... problem

Featured Replies

Right, I posted a couple of weeks ago about a noise I had whilst driving, and a few people correctly diagnosed it as a wheel bearing (thanks to everyone who answered)

Anyway, I had it booked it at my local garage to have it replaced, and it turns out both the o/s and n/s front wheel bearings were going... the n/s a lot lot worse than the o/s...

So, I asked them to do both while they had it, better than taking it back whenever the other starts getting too noisy.

To get the n/s off they had to use a 20 tonne press to get it off... but eventually they did it and replaced it.

The problem is, the o/s bearing+hub they couldn't get it off, and they tried for a full day (didn't get charged for that though)

I was told that it will need changing at some point but they cannot get it off like it is now.

This is where I forgot exactly what he said... They couldn't get the hub+bearing off (as they come together when you order)

So to replace it I would need to source a part either second hand, or brand new (i'd go second hand) but I can't remember what the part was called... but I'm guessing he means I need (say from a scrappers) the hub+bearing and then what these attach to...

Can anyone help me out here? :P

/edit - yes I feel pathetic for asking this :P

Think I've found it...

Wheel bearing housing?

The bearing and housing come complete as a kit for about £70 / 80 iirc. Check my thread below for part no. info and take this to skoda parts when ordering:

You need to have this done at a VAG independent or skoda dealer that has the special puller tool specifically designed for the hub on the fabia (possibly polo as well but i'm not 100% sure). I'm not surprised the garage you used last time had problems if they didn't use this tool. Mine cost me £170 to replace one side (parts plus a couple hours labour).

It's important that the bearing is fitted properly to avoid potential ABS issues afterwards. The danger is that the bearing may not be pressed properly into the hub with a standard press or indeed that the ABS ring will get damaged. As i say you need the right tool for the job.

Best taking it to someone who's done these before to get it done properly...
