Electrical Problems??

Featured Replies

A friend of mine has a Seat Leon Cupra FR 1.8 20vt 180bhp. As this is technically the same car as the Mk1 vRS I thought I would post here.

His temperature gauge goes nicely up to 90 degrees when warm and then suddenly drops to 0ish before going back up to 90 when it feels like it. Also his rear wash doesn't spray very well and leaks into the boot sometimes (he thinks these 2 things are connected)

Also, his tailgate open light on the dashboard comes on when it feels like it and his alarm goes off randomly too!

Any suggestions? The Seat dealer has suggested that some kind of sensor is playing up and it will cost about £30 to put right? After they have taken some money off of him for diagnostics no doubt!!

Your thoughts??

The temperature problem sounds like a faulty coolant temperature sensor, but may be the dash unit playing up. Get it VAG-com'ed.

The tailgate problems are probably all connected to the washer problem. It sounds like either the hose has popped off on the inside, or the washer nozzle is partially blocked and needs to be unblocked with a pin etc.

The water leak in the boot caused by this washer problem is then going to affect the wiring in the tailgate switch for the central locking, which is why he's seeing a tailgate open light on the dash and why the alarm keeps going off - the switch is telling it the tailgate is open when it's not.

When the leak is fixed, dry out the tailgate switch thoroughly. If that doesn't fix the problem then it may need a new tailgate switch.

Blimey , I agree as above ;)

Some clever people

The chances are the engine will be the AUQ , same as the vRS

So get the new coolant temp sensor , as they are so common , they have been superceed`d

I would not bother with a diagnostic check myself.....

£22.50 + VAT for the sensor , and £1 ish for the seal

Just get it done , especially if it has the old black one on

The coolant temp sensor was the first thing I bought my son , the day he got his MK4 Golf....

It is so common

Yes take the rear hatch cover off , then reclip the hose , that will most likely be the fault and dry the swiches , as that is another common fault :( kept me awake one night listening to my son`s alarm too

A couple of small tie-wraps on the wiper hose light stop it from popping apart again, although it will just make some other joint in the system the weak point - which might be worse/harder to get at and fix.

Agreed again. Except in the detail that I think a blocked tailgate jet might cause the connector to pop off which makes that a possible cause, but not if that's all it is.
