Restoring scuffed plastic trim

Featured Replies

I posted this on the Octy I forum but probably better posted here.

I have a scuff mark on the black plastic part of my passenger door card thanks to a mates shoe and wondered if there are any products which will restore the plastic to what it should look like. I'm not keen on using any kind of touch up paint as I think that will end up looking really obviously touched up, likewise I'm not going to spend £100+ on a new door card because of a 1 inch scuff.

I've been doing a bit of trim restoration recently. I used Meg's Vinyl Cleaner with a Meg's detailing brush, then Meg's Trim Detailer. I then rubbed the section down with an old towel to work in the detailer after a few minutes and to remove the excess. Then after it had dried in (overnight or later in the day) I sprayed the area over with 303 Protectant which provides some UV protection to the area, but also leaves a matt finish.

Hope this helps. It's been quite successful in the bits I've done on the Octy - along the front passenger door openings and the edges of the front seat bases.

That sounds pretty good, yes the seats have got scuffs on the bottom of them on mine too now you mention it!

The Vinyl Cleaner is excellent for the plastic bumper inserts on the Mk1 too. Same procedure for those as the interior plastic bits really :)

I've been using Autoglym bumper care on the black exterior strips but it never seems to keep them black for longer than a few weeks, so I'll try the Megs stuff

I used to have the same problem, and it's because products like that just put a layer on the top of the plastic; it's still dirty and discoloured underneath so the product removes itself quite quickly.

If you look at this post from the Meg's seminar we had a few years ago, where I picked up the Vinyl Cleaner, you'll see the difference it makes to the Mk1 bumpers:

That stuff looks the business. I found the 303 stuff on ebay, might get a big pot and do all the plastic trim.

It's a shame it looks like that was the only Megs seminar and they never did another one

Good stuff. Think we could probably organise another seminar, if there was sufficient interest.
