Fabia 1.4 MPI Air Intake and EGR or ?!?

Featured Replies

I've read a lot about how much the otto engine can benefit from an easyer air flow through the air-box. I tryed to find my answer by searching first but I was unlucky. :(

I've opened the stock airbox of the car in the title and I will have to change the stock air filter soon. I thought of replacing it with a more performant filter, but did not decide on one yet. If I am already doing this I thought of a better air intake.

The stock air box has a preety restrictive snorkel attached to it and sucks air from behind the grill where there is the only entrance from outside ( everything else is covered by the radiator ). I thought I will feed air from that place using a thicker pipe and cleaning all restrictions inside the airbox.

I've noticed that the snorkel has a secondary entrace. I've opened it and found out that it is blocked by a valve ( looks like a small door ) with a spring and controlled by a sensor ( not plugged ) with a small intake tube that "tests" the air intake. This entrace (in the snorkel) is connected from the back side of the engine with a hose. This is all located before the airbox, so whatever comes out that secondary entrance from the engine is fed through the airbox.

I don't want to use a lower intake ( closer to the road ) because I am driving in dusty roads and very cold winters ( Romania ).

I thought it is exhaust used in EGR to minimize the noxes by increasing the intake air temperature, but this reduces performance. Did I guess right or am I completely off track???

Is then a larger tube to feed the airbox mod still possible (it shoud be since the cone air induction kits I've seend have no secondary entrance)? What to do with the secondary hose (the EGR or whatever that is)? Thank you.

I think I've done a terrible mistake. That can not be the EGR, in fact I thing my car does not even have an EGR ( beeing euro2 ). That can only be the heater function that is used when the intake air is very cold ( too cold ) and the sensor is in fact a thermostate that opens the door to a warmer intake so that the intake gets to the proper temperature.

That sounds right. Have you managed to reconnect the air intake as it was or have you modified it?

No, I have not done any modifications on the intake yet. That's why I was asking about the secondary entrace in the snorkel ( the one with the thermostate ).

Winters are realy cold in my country and I don't know what the implications of driving without this warming feature could be. It would be nice to know at what temperature does the thermostate operate.

The real ugly part is that the segment that contains this "low temperature compensation" device is realy narrow. Of course a wider entrance through this segment could improve the air flow if it was designed as a RAM to force the air. Still the operating temperature of the thermostate is an issue.

Fabia.

Stock airbox with sport/OEM filter, maybe more sure it will be a sport. Behind the grill a opening to get air directly ( everything else goes trough the radiator ). Behind the opening sits the airbox snorkel but not completely covering the opening.

If the snorkel would be replaced with a thicker pipe that would be mounted on the grill opening so that the whole opening is covered, then this could act like an air-pump, aplying pressupre on the whole air system, something like an RAM. Can this be good? Woudn't the pressure be too great at higher speed? Also the snorker gets the pressure at high speeds but this is more restrictive than the new pipe. Can this be risky, or just the filter will get dirty sooner?

Have any of you guys tryied it?
