VRS Petrol towing query

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been done to death, but I would really appreciate some advice on the towing limit of a Petrol VRS hatch. Mine's a 2007 (07) model.

All the info iv'e read on various websites (and Skoda promo literature) points to a braked 1400 kg towing limit for the VRS Hatch and Estate. So far so good.

However, flicking through the technical supplement (and checking with the metal plate attached to the passenger door frame) the unbraked towing limit is stated to be 1100kg.

I should point out that it's an EU Octavia (Malta) rather than one from a UK dealership which I purchased from Motorpoint. It's been as good as gold and appears to be exactly the same as a UK model.

I have been mulling over the potential purchase of a caravan for a while now (stop giggling at the back) and I'm very reluctant to let this car go. I have e-mailed Skoda UK but no response as yet.

Can anyone help me out here?

Hi Wild rover

First, I don't know if it is a typo, but:"the unbraked towing limit is stated to be 1100kg" if

that is what you mean, that is incorrect, as any UNBRAKED trailer is limited to a MAXIMUM of 750KG

The 1400Kg seems a reasonable limit, but if you were to tow that weight you would be over 85% limit.

Also if you have passed your driving test after Jan 1997 you may have to take a furthur test to tow a trailer.

Thanks Radiotwo,

Apologies, the braked towing limit is stated to be 1100kg on my ID plate and tech supplement which is quite a way lower than the 1400kg I was under the impression is was.

I passed my test back in 1993, so that should not be a problem.

Hi ive just bought a 2002 octavia vrs and im pulling a 4 birth caravan with it weight of caravan is 999kg but i can tow up to 1300kg with the car even though you have the new model i cant see any problems. Try this web site www.whattowcar.com it will tell you can match the car to what caravan it will pull.

Going back to the new driving licence as long as the car and caravan dont exceed 3500kg you dont have to do a test if you past your test after 1997

Another thing to watch out for is the maximum allowed tow ball weight. VAG cars generally have a pretty low limit (possibly 55-75kg ?).

Here in Oz most trailers (and caravans etc) are designed for 10% of the trailer's weight to be on the towball, so that would limit you to a 750Kg trailer even if it had brakes. I understand euro trailers may be designed for lower tow ball weights, but something to be aware of anyway.
