Variable service?

Featured Replies

Ok everyone, my dealer said, when I bought the car, that it was on variable serving. The first service was done at 18,000 miles and the car has now done 36,000 miles with no hint that it needs a service. I can imagine that due to the high milage and low age of the car (07) that it has done alot of motorway miles so obviously the time between the servicing would be quite long. However, I have had the car for about 4000 miles now and I'll admit it has been driven hard alot of the time. So wouldn't it be near a service very soon? Also, i've been reading the threads and i'm not sure if i've got this right, but if i press the milage trip button whilst turning the ignition on should i see the time to next service? because I dont.

Whilst i am here, is getting vag-com worthwile. How much? how easy? etc. Cheers.

It's turn on the ingition, don't start the car, then press the reset I think (but not certain).

My A3 did over 20k on a longlife service once.

its turn on ignition press and hold reset button for about 3 secs then you will see a spanner with mileage to next service

You can check the miles/time to next service, regardless of whether you are on variable or fixed servicing ;

1. Run the engine

2. Turn the ignition key one click to switch off the engine.

3. Press and hold the mileage trip button for 2+ seconds, then release it; and

4. Dash display will change and show you the mileage and days to next service.

Do let us know when it is due. ;)

NB> This routine also works on Fabia II/Roomster and I would presume new Superb.

TDI can do about 18.6k miles (30k km) between services as a maximum (assuming it's a PD) so if it's heading towards that mark then you probably want to get the car booked in for it's next service.

ok guys, I did the button ignition thing and it said 6800 with a spanner beside it, then it changed to 339 with a spanner and on top of the spanner was a clock. So, i'm guessing that its 6800 miles to the next service OR 339 days, based on the oil quality. Does that seem right? That will mean it was serviced at 18000 miles but it wont need the next service till it hits 45000 miles. that seem quite a millage between servicing.

Its usually around 18K max between services. Maybe somehow the counter has been reset along the line. I would be looking at getting serviced soon.

I'd agree. My vRS TDI set on variable is due 18600 miles from previous service.

The 339 (days) seems right presuming you have had the car about a year, but 6800 (miles) seems too far. Might it be 680 miles?

How long have you had the car ?

Did the dealer service the car when you bought it? Maybe didn't mark it in the book?

If you have done 4000miles and it says 6800 to next service could be that it was serviced by the dealer when you bought it and he reset the service indicator using the trip reset button which sets it to fixed interval.

I've had the car for 4 months now and done about 4000 miles. The dealer didn't say they had serviced it and after I picked it up and got home I couldn't find the service book. I called Rainworth to tell them and got a call back saying they couldn't find the book so they were going to get the records out and give me a replacement book. When i recieved it it had 1 service at 18000 miles (exactly). Now at the time I didn't know all about variable servicing and the distance between servicing (all I knew is the car decided when it neeeded doing). Now i'm not normally the suspicious type but doesn't that smell a bit fishy, I mean the max distance between serving is normally 18,000 miles and the car was serviced at exactly 18,000 miles. And if this has been reset at some point after they have had it, why would they do that when hasn't been serviced?

Earlier this week I bought a PD170 VRS from a guy who had bought it originally as an ex-demo from Rainworth. We appear to have the exact same issue with the service book.

My car is just coming up to 22k and computer says 7k to next service. The only stamp in the book is for the PDI which says next service at 10,000 miles, which is nonsense for a start as the sticker with the factory build codes on says QG1, indicating it shipped set to variable servicing. The guy I bought it off said he took it back to Rainworth at 10k to have this service. He was told it was done. When preparing to sell the car on he noticed there was no stamp in the book for this and took the service book to Rainworth to get stamped, whereupon he was told that it hadn't been serviced, it had just had a "levels check".

If we look at the milages, current 22k + 7k = 29k. 29k - 10k = 19k which is right for a QG1 service interval. The service interval was clearly reset at 10k miles.

I called Rainworth myself and spoke to a guy called David Horsfield, who said he hadn't been there long and didn't really know what's what. I explained the above and asked him to check on their computer. He said it says "levels check and reset QG1". He couldn't tell me if the oil had been changed. Now clearly, there is no way in hell they should reset the variable service interval unless they did change the oil with 507 spec, but nobody knows for sure whether it was done or not. David agreed to stamp the service book at 10k for me. I am also tempted to swap the oil and filter as soon as possible myself just so I know where I am with things.

It seems that many dealers seem to make an art out of being utterly incompetent (just look at the number of suspension chocks left in, xenon headlights not setup and other stupid things missed regularly at PDI). :rotz:

So it sounds possible that my car just had it's levels checked and the service indicator reset. If thats the case, well, thats not on is it.

It is possible - that's why I asked how long you have had the car. They could also have replaced the oil and the filter and reset the light and this would show up with the same mileage. You need to find out exactly what they did - if it was me, I'd change the oil, the oil filter and reset the trip then at least I'd know where I was starting from.

Ignorance definitely isn't bliss in a case like this

Sod Rainworth, I'm going to go and get a gallon of 507 and a filter and do it now so I know where I am. By the way Fitz - vagcom (now vcds) is well worthwhile getting.

Could someone confirm wether its 30000km's or 30000miles for the max distance for varible service on the PD engine. I know it about 30k km's for petrol models but i'm hoping its 30k MILES for diesels.

No need for a reply.... I can firm it's upto 30000 miles for diesel engines.

It used to be upto 30K miles for the mk1 octy, but an interrogation on my old 2005 PD140 dashpod before being swapped to the maxidot one revealed the max mileage on mine to be at 18,800 miles and 2 years. This is the max interval that my car will run before prompting for a service. The dashpod works internally using kms even though the display readout is in miles, so thats about 30,000kms.

Funny that this has come up as I have been scratching my head over my car for a couple of weeks. My Superb 2lt TDi 140bhp has 14,000 on the clock (took delivery Jan Last year) and still no sign of a service light. First Derv I have had so been used to annual or 10k whichever comes first. Checked the service book again yesterday to make sure I wasnt going mad and it says that the first service should be either when the car yells me or DECEMBER 2010 - whichever comes first. That cant be right can it??? I even called the supplying dealer to check and they confirmed. Seems crazy to me.

You proberbly have about 3K miles to go, before you get the countdown on startup. My PD140 is on 71K miles and had 3 services in that time with no issues to report.

Not for the PD engines in the MK II it isn't.

The PD engines maximum between service is 30,000 km (18.6k miles).

This was confirmed by a couple of main dealers, my service book and skoda.

On the MK I it was 30'000 miles max.

I'm confused now  and I was hoping it was 30000 miles. I got the info from my service book which has a leaflet with a picture or a MKII it says " The maximum of 30000 miles is for 4 cylinder diesel engines. All other diesel and petrol engines have a lower maximum milage. V6 diesel upto 24000 miles. All petrol up to 20000 miles":confused: Think i might have to give SKODA a ring.

Did you get anywhere with Rainworth Fitz? I screen-shotted VCDS SRI Reset screen when I did the oil change on mine to prove they had reset the service interval, even though they said they hadn't changed the oil.

I didn't get round to calling them mate. I've kinda talked myself out of it because surely if the counter was reset and the oil wasn't changed, wouldn't the oil sensor pick up the fact the oil was rubbish and tell me I needed a service. Thats how i think it would work but if its not somebody feel free to correct me (I'm not totally sure when it comes to this car just yet) and the fact my book say's 30000 miles. And another point, my missus has just been made redundant so I cant really afford to spend 300 odd quid (or whatever a full service is) on a service when my cat is telling me i dont need one. But I am a bit confused by all of the conflicting info I have recieved.:confused:
