Do red Fabias fade in sunlight?

Featured Replies

Simple question really.

since buying the fabia in jan this year although i am more than happy with it i keep getting this nagging feeling when looking at thr paintwork that it is fading a touch!

Do red fabias suffer from this?

I'm planning a full detail of it at some point anyway as i recently got myself a Kestrel DAs-6 but in the mean time i just wondered if anyone had had there one fade on them?

The only part of my 5 year old fabia (red) that has faded is the plastic wing at the back of the roof.

Ahh okay perhaps i'm just expecting a bit much from the colour.

Yeah, the rear spoilers seem quite prone to fading.. my 04 black fabia has a fading spoiler!

I'm guessing the rear spoiler is single stage paint and the rest of the car has a clear coat over it then?

Yes all paints will fade to some extent and red is the worst colour for this (green is the best for not fading in pigment terms). It probably shows more on recent cars as the red is a darker blood red rather than the rally red that the earlier cars were painted in.

It's a 2004 VRS but only done 26k.

I'm guessing a machine polish will revive it back to it's former glory then?

As an aside my neigbour has a 2007 golf gti in what looks to be the same solid red colour. is it the same as it sure looks it?

Seems the spoiler is a common thing. A good cutback polish, wax, sealant etc will sort it though.

my '04 red Fabia seems to be ok but i'm not that critical.

If any one does want fading paint jsut buy yourself an Ovni Yellow Seat - my 02 Ibiza sold in October was about a dozen shades!!

i have a 54, the paints relatively looked after so no fading, the spoiler does go cloudy between polishes now and again but comes up well.

had my 04 red combi for nearly 3 years and it didnt fade.... unlike the red '98 punto i had from 01 - 03(bonnet went pink)...or the '99 megane which faded to a lesser extent(only noticed by photo comparasion)

Answered that question then.

Only area to keep a keen eye on with a Red Fabia VRS is the spoiler.

Cheers

ALL flat red's fade if not looked after properly.

Aye, a good detail will take of the top layer of the lacquer to reveal fresh looking paint. For obvious reasons, you don't want to be machine polishing more than once or twice a year.....

Get a good sealant or wax on there to help prevent fading in the future :)

I was informed by a paint shop man that external plastic parts on cars tend to fad as they cannot be heated up enough to " cure " the paint. As they would start to melt or deform. No doubt he was talking Sh1te, just like me......:)

If paint fades under the clearcoat, then no amount of machine polishing will restore the colour. Quite simply you cannot get at the paint for the clearcoat. That said, VAG red paint with clearcoat seems fairly fade resistant. Neighbors Y plate SEAT still looks like new.

Hello chunkytfg,

My 2005 Fabia VRS has got red paint sun-fade mostly on each end of tail-gate spoiler.

Ian. 30/09/2009. :o

All red cars will fade if the paint work isnt looked after.

I had a red corsa a few years back and when I got it, it was a bit faded if I had just left it, it would have turned pink

My 05 reg is pretty good all round but as with everyone else the spolier tends to lose its gloss after a while, although a good waxing and some elbow grease is enough to bring it back usually.

Prevention of fading is better than a cure so a regular polish stops the UV rays fading the paint. Some polishes are more UV proof than others, ask in the Detailing Forum for the best polishes and waxes to stop fading.

Have you seen old Citroens in red? they fade to all sorts of shades, pink and orange usually and as others say the plastic parts fade the worst.

I had a 98 Tornado Red Ibiza, regularly polished (nothing flash- proabably Mer), and it had no fade after 5 years.

The Leon's (Emocion Red) bonnet looks a little faded between polishes, but comes up well. The rest of the car has no fading at all.

Mer is good for UV filtering but is a cutting polish and not recommeded for modern pait finishes.

I know. It's not bad on anything a bit neglected or for occaisional use though, and it didn't seem to hurt the Ibiza. Isn't SRP similar?

Yes. For occasional use only, good for very fine scratches. Don't know what SRP is.
