vRS TFSi mpg

Featured Replies

Having read a few posts from members asking for mpg figures or asking whether a diesel or petrol vRS would make more sense for their use, I thought it would be useful to post my experience to date in my petrol vRS. As you'll see from the info below, the petrol vRS can be surprisingly frugal.

My car is standard (i.e. no remaps, etc) and has covered 7,500 miles in 4 months of ownership from new.

My journeys consist of mainly motorway driving during the week (approx 90 miles per day) and then a few miles at weekends having fun on A and B roads. The average mpg on the dashpod is now reading 41.5mpg - this is on the total mileage reading, not the last trip reading.

The best 'trip' mpg reading I've had on my daily commute was 47.4mpg (45 miles mainly motorway driving at between 65 and 70mph - which is about as quick as you can go on the busy M62).

Now some of you will be thinking that my trip computer is being a trifle optimistic when calculating the mpg. However, I check the mpg myself each week upon filling the tank, noting the miles covered since last fill up, dividing this by the number of litres used to fill up and then multiplying this by 4.5461 to convert to miles per gallon. Only once was it below 40mpg - 38.9 that week due to a couple of really slow journeys home in bad traffic.

So, if anyone is thinking of buying the petrol vRS but is concerned about the mpg, don't be. As long as you don't have a heavy right foot all the time, you can achieve surprisingly good results.

As they say, you can have your cake and eat it ! :)

man, I get nowhere near that

even on a motorway drive to Aberdeen from newcastle I have never got 40mpg..nearest I ever got was 39.2

on my drive to work I may get between 22 and 24...on short blast down the a19 to do some fishing I may see 30-34

petrol of course and 9 times out of 10 it will be V-power in the tank

I had a long term average of c.35mpg on mine, plenty of long journey's and motorway miles.

Often got 39mpg on certain routes. Ran mine on V Power also

I have a fair bit of town driving thrown in to a reasonable leve; of A roads, with the odd motorway thrown in. First few thousand miles averaged 25.5mpg (indicated)

Rear tyres wore after 5,000 miles, so it had a ful geometry and now i can average up to 30 mpg - think it is at 30 - 31 right now.

a motorway or long A road run will now give me 33 ish - on a recent 300 mile each way trip from Dover to Liverpool spent at 80 - 90 on the way and 70 - 80 on the way back, gave 33.1 up there and 38.4 on the way back, leaving on Tesco super and coming back on Esso super.

A one mile trip to the office in the morning gives about 16 mpg :o

One mile?! Walk!

At the OP, what tyres are you currently running on, and at what pressure, and what fuel are you using?

Steve

My long term average (September 08 to now) is 12386 miles / 12386 litres = 47.07 MPG.

It's a diesel and I'm a bit heavy footed.

Wardy - tyres are Michelin Pilot Primacy, 17" rims, pressure is (from memory) 31ps all round. Fuel is Shell Unleaded (95 octane) - don't see the need for the expensive stuff at the moment.

Well the 17s will help versus us owners on 18s. And with 95 you're not really getting the full performance from the engine and it is recommended you run it on 98 where available. I can see how that would help achieve the sort of MPG figures you're seeing though.

Your MPG findings aside, it all depends on what people are using the car for, what types of road they typically use and how they drive. A massive amount of variables there. Your fun down A & B roads might not be what others have in mind, for example - especially on 95 fuel ;)

Just hit 8k miles on mine. Best i ever manage on a economical run (average speed 55mph or so) is around 40mpg. On more regular journeys and mixed driving i think i'm probably averaging 32mpg at best.

My long term average was about 27mpg. I did used to drive it like I'd just pinched it though :)

My long term average (since I fitted the Maxidot about 3 months ago) is 27mpg. I get over 30 sometimes ;)

Uncle Salty, is yours the newer FSi engine by any chance?

So it ain't just me who struggles for decent consumption :D

Had my Octy vRS T-FSI for just over a week now and managed something like 34 mpg from the first tank, although that did include a 4.5 hr 270 mile journey back from Leeds (it has just under 38k on the clock). In fairness I drove it like a scalded cat as it was my first time behind the wheel !! I bought the car hoping to achieve 30 mpg so I am pleased so far. It was never going to be an economical car, but that was never really the point was it?

BTW has anyone recorded their mpg's using 95 and 98 RON fuel ? Does the 98 return better mpg figures that make the additional cost worthwhile ? Car feels plenty quick enough for me on 95 !

My early TFSI now averages 34 - 36 mpg, worked out properly with pen & paper! However it's not totally standard, so I'm getting 2 mpg less at the moment than when it was in factory form. I drive a mix of city & motorway miles, and usually nothing less than 30 miles, with a max of 250!

The second "however", is that it realy depends on driving style, as I've even had single figures if driven in ernest!

The big "but" is that I love driving it! It puts the sort of smile on my face that I haven't had since my 1st brand new car, a early mkII 16v golf GTI! Considering the size of car, weight & performance at my disposal, I think 34 mpg is acceptable! Oh I never use anything less than 98RON petrol 'cos of the mods. When it was standard I did run 95RON for 4 weeks and it seemed to knock about 3-5 mpg off the total.

Presume you mean TSI?

Dan the v8 Man - My vRS has the TFSI engine, not the the new TSI one.

All I can say is thats MPG I can only dream of - 32-33 on a run and 25-27 on shorter journeys but then ours is an estate on 18"s.

More importantly the TFSI engine is designed to run on 98 Ron - you can put in 95 as a stop gap only.

It runs lovely on V Power or better still Tesco 99 (yes really), on 95 I am sure it will retard the ignition and reduce the power - if thats the case why buy the VRS. 98 or 99 ron petrol made a big difference in our Imprezza (felt like 15 - 20BHP and people who had them on roplling roads confirmed this) and even made our y MINI Cooper rev cleaner in the upper rev band - this making it zippier. Well worth it IMHO. Oh and Super is still cheaper than standard diesel!

Just a quick comment from the oil burning camp. :D

I routinely get 40 - 42mpg, driven briskly on my regular commute and can extend this on a fast Motorway trip to 42 - 44mpg.

Earlier this week I did a 280 mile round trip to Somerset and drove in 'lightfoot' mode with gentle acceleration and Motorway cruising at sensible speeds - achieved 48.5mpg for the round trip.

17k miles on mine normally on 97+RON bar a few tanks.

My long term average is just under 33mpg right now, coming up a bit after winter (just going by the comp, it's been ok when I've done the math).

I got an average of 35mpg to and from Glasgow airport doing anything up to 85 (SWMBO late to leave as usual, only just made the flight).

At a steady 70 I can get 42mpg but more normally 37mpg.

32-33 is probably about right for me, anything over 35 is a good day.

My TFSI also likes Tesco 99 better than V-Power, in fact I've been thinking that V-power has seemed a bit crap of late, very much like 95RON.

my avearage is up and down all the time.Normally i get between 28 and 35mpg, the highest on budget driving is normally 42mpg. I have had 47mpg on one long trip before but it doesnt happen often. I drive mine just like like Jonno vRS said.

I managed 13mpg at my last trip to the nurburgring over 8 laps, also included is a very slow 2mile drive to cool down the brakes around the local area between each lap(which would have increased the average a little)

guess that equates to around 120 miles.
