ATF on a Manual GearBox

Featured Replies

i have a problem here in DR.

the gear box oil for my transmission is 75Wxx but i cant get that one

the only gear oil i can get is 80 monograde 140 monograde (thicker than honey :S) and i think the first one is for heavy trucks or something like that...

so i asked a mechanic i know, he say "just put in ATF, most Manual Gearboxes work just the same or better" but since here in the Dominican Republic you hear a lot of stuff i wanted to run it by you guys,

what do you think, do i go with the 80 monograde (its runs like hot molasses) or should i try the ATF...

a racer i know also used regular engine oil on his Honda Civic but i think thats no good eyther (aldow 75W90 trans oil should be the same viscosity as 15W40 oil as far as oilman said on a post in this forum)

I can't see an issue with using ATF tbh, quite a few of the gearbox techs I know swear by it. I have ATF in the Golf box and it works just fine.

Shouldnt be a problem. There are plenty of trucks running round with ATF in the gearboxes, and it doesnt cause a problem

SAE EP 80 API GL4 is just what you need for it.

thus straight 80 is ok. but check for extreme pressure (EP) and API GL4 signs.

THanks dude for the reply;

after a ****load of reading through the internet and carfull consideration and also hunting for the right oil i ended up putting 3 liters of 80W90 GL-5.

the thing that ****ed me off is that the oil that came out of the trans did not smell at all, it only had a light carbon smell, but apart fron that nothing, meaning it had no protection and it was basicaly just grease.... :S

2.4 ~ 2.5 liters needed dont over fill. may leak or act like retarder and force engine not to run as free as it need underload

as stock oil is 75w90, I think what you've chosen would be fine. :thumbup:
