Replacing CV gaitor

Featured Replies

I recently replaced the brake discs on my 97 Felicia, and noticed there was grease sprayed up the side of the gearbox. On closer inspection I found a small tear in the CV rubber. I've bought a new rubber but am wondering just how big a job is it? I've read that I need to take the driveshaft out but was thinking if I could remove the outer joint at the hub then slide the new (inner) gaitor the length of the driveshaft. Would this be any quicker or less aggravation than draining the gearbox/taking the whole thing off. How long a job is this or is it better to take a hit at the garage, also what sort of money would this cost ? Any advice much appreiciated.

Normally the inner joint has three prongs with a bearing arrangement on them, which slides into a housing. The housing stays with the final drive, so no oil is leaked.

Well, this may be immaterial now as the rear brake has just shot the entire fluid reservoir all over the wheel, and dual carriage way. I limped into a kwick fit, when they took the wheel off the drum, nut and axle threads were blue/grey. The nut is seized on and I was told I'll need a new stub axle, bearing, nut and possibly drum,200 pounds minimum + whatever caused the original brake fail. I've had this car 2 years 32k when I got it now 51k paid 495 and have spent

battery 50

alternator 100

clutch 200

exhaust 60

brakes pads/discs 60

Is it worth the bother hassel and money to get this next thing done or should I give up and get another car. This is my first Felicia and I've got to say its a smashing car when it's not costing me money . Advice/views please.

I'm surprised Kwik Fit didn't tell you that you also needed 4 new tyres and a complete exhaust system while you were there!

Did they make any attempt to remove the nut?

They did try to take it off, now nut has 6 flats and 6 bevelled corners!

Hi there, I recently had to get my inner cv boot changed, got a boot, clips and grease in a kit from Jorily (on here and eBay) for about £10, found a local independent mechanic who did the job in just over an hour for £30

As the nut is now damaged the best method would be to grind into the nut with a small disc cutter or drill and then chisel the nut until it splits. The other method is if you can hire of borrow a nut splitter to do the job. Clean and smear the thread with copper slip before fitting the new nut.

Sounds like kwik sh!t have royally messed up this. To round the nut off they used the wrong tool, size socket or type. Kwik fit people aren't real mechanics - they're only really geared up to do certain types of job like changing pads, disks, exhaust, shocks etc. Throw in a commission payment system and suddenly they're all too eager to sell you everything you don't need.
