Fabia vRS towbar.

Featured Replies

Has anyone fitted a towbar to their vRS yet. If so what did it involve.

To answer my own question. Skoda Auto say that " the Fabia vRS is not designed to Tow, as such fitting a towbar would be illegal under EU legislation"

I have seen some one sucessfully fit a tow bar to their vrs.

Used the standard fabia towbar aswell. The only thing that was necessary over a std fabia is that the bottom (underneath where you don't see) you have to cut a hole for the fold down electrical plug.

Can be fitted - but you're stck with it on once you've committed.

and towed bike trailer and double axel trailer i borrowed from work.

Can put on "standard" fabia towbar but about an square inch of bumper needed to be cut out.. I'll take a picture if you want, it's mega neat and i have the added pice of mind that when the other half reverses into a wall it's only the tow bar that's gona bump it !

By the way the tow bar bolts into holes that exist in the fabia body.. would have thought that they would be blocked off if a tow bar was never supposed to be fitted.

I'm considering a vRS but need a towbar

Which make did you buy, where did you get it, did you have to cut the bumper and what does it look like?

cheers

I tow with a Octavia elegance pd 130 ....absolute magic .... hills and slower vehicles are NOT a problem any more, even does ridiculous speeds in sixth gear with a three quater ton caravan on the back and because of the suspension and wider tyres it is very stable I would think the Fabia would be just as stable as the suspension is stiffer.

Underneath its the same as any other Fabia bodyshell so all Fabia brackets will fit, go with a well known make as they all have to get certificated for the vehicle they are made for.

Beware - because you're modifying the car in a way Skoda didn't intend and doesn't allow, you're potentially invalidating both your warranty and more critically your insurance. Imagine if you have an accident and your insurance company invalidates your policy - doesn't bear thinking about... I presume others who have already illegally fitted a towbar have advised their insurance companies???

If anybody is interested I have a Brink towbar for a Fabia. It's a swan neck type, very discreet and requires only a tiny cut of the plastic bumper moulding (on the return edge which is invisible unless you lie on the ground !) It has plug and play electrics - none of those damned crimped things - and can be fitted in less than an hour including the cup-o-tea halfway through.

It has towed a baggage trailer TWICE only - once was a dbl mattress and once was a sideboard, so it hasn't been overworked by any means.

I also have a British bar on the other Fab that is two years old and rusty as hell (the bar not the car !!). Fortunately it is being traded in next week with the rest of the car.

Brinks retail at something north of two hundred quid but as I shall be Fabia-less for a while it is available to anybody that makes a semi-decent offer.

Pete.

Is it the detachable Brink of just a solid one. I,m interested, PM me with price.

Craig

Hi Craig,

Couldn't find out how to attach photo's to a PM so have posted them here.

The swan neck is detachable but not by a quick release system. Instead it is held onto the towbar crossmember by two 19mm bolts. You can run the car without the swan neck attached and the bar would be undetectable. Personally I left it on all the time - it gives a bit more protection when folks try parking-by-touch !

Full instructions are included (how to remove plastic bumper, wiring harness connections etc) The bumper cut out is literally about two square inches and is not visible except from a worms eye view.

All the best

Pete

I'm not sure about that. I had heard that the EU legisilation makes it easy for you to add a towbar without invalidating warrenty etc! How can an ordinary Fabia be designed to tow yet the vRS model not?

Brink DO NOT make a tow bar for the VRS. They told me . My local dealer does not for a VRS .The next nearest one said he did. I DO NOT want to cut a big hole in the bumper that I paid lots of money for. (small underneath ok) Can someone give a definate answer to this problem. As I would realy like a tow bar.. B

Oops - one can of worms and pass the tin opener please !

Let me say straight away that neither of my Fabias were/are vRS's so I cannot comment on whether a Brink bar will fit. If they say it won't then I certainly won't argue with them.

Best I can suggest is that if anybody is local to Aberdeen with a vRS they are welcome to a trial fit, shouldn't take very long and we won't actually need to cut the bumper to determine whether it'll fit or not. Warranty issues however, I want nothing to do with.

Failing that - anybody with Fab hatch of the non-vRS variety want a towbar ?

what a coincidence, everytime you typed 'do not' you accidently pressed caps lock at the same time :)

Maybe im speaking out of my @rse but if the vRS hasnt been designed with towing in mind, will all the mechanical parts stand up to the task ok?

Witter do. For the VRs Fab - yes they do...I have one, go to a witter fitter (funny!) and you can have one. Not swang neck but pretty neat.

Now stop worrying.

Have you got any pictures?

Have you got any pictures?

Do you have to cut the bumper. most of the ones iv'e seen you have to make a cut out in the bumper skirt bottom bit thing. at the mercy of the wobbly saw. Trust me he said I am a doctor.. Ho Ho :D

No- sorry, there is a small cut to the bumper and I realise some of you won't like that. It is listed (vrs) on their official fitting guide with different instructions to standard fabia. Witter are a reputable firm and this tends to suggest it is not illegal to tow with a vrs even though skoda are not forthcoming with tech info such as max towing weights.

Just spoken to Witter they say they don't supply a bar for vRS as its not an authorised tow car!
