vRS Alternative?

Featured Replies

Something I was think about the other day. Depending upon the power that can be got out of the other engines, (1.4 TDi maybe?) is it possible that modding those may make more sense for an all out performace car?

My thinking was that it would weight less up front and might understeer less than the vRS. Plus as we all know less weight is better in nearly every way. I know it wouldn't have the power of a vRS but could you not remap it or anything?

Just thinking aloud really, please don't slate this idea.

if you want an ''all out performance car'' then a 1.4 fabia is not going to be the answer, nor would a vRS in that respect.

but why waste money on a 1.4 which will never extract the same power you could get out 1.9?

you could spend less money changing the handling aspects of a vRS than it would cost to get 130bhp from the 1.4 (if thats even possible).

A decent remap, rear anti roll bar, 312mm brakes and some uprated suspension bushes makes the fabia vrs one of the best "warm hatches" IMO.

Fair point, but I meant more of an ultimate Fabia as I know there are a number of stock cars that would be better than a modded Fabia.

And on the power front I was merealy wondering cos in theory if the power was possible then I figured it would be better. Costs etc maybe prohibitive but as said before, just thinking really.

if just thinking and costs werent an issue then i still fail to see the advantages of the 1.4...

you can tune the 1.9 knowingly to around 260bhp and i know people with plans to break the 300 mark.

so unless you can extract huge quantities of power from the 1.4 then its going to be a waste of time.

you say about the 1.4 being lighter at the front end so may benifit handling, add some braces and coils to a vrs possibly with the addition of a slip diff then the vrs can be made to handle pretty well, i know mines does.

a 1.8T Fabia would have been giggles . . . I know i'd have bought it over the Derv if it was about!

infact a good example of a vRS alternative could be my mates SEAT Leon, its a 1.9 TDI remapped to 140bhp i think it came as 110 standard. its holds against the vRS pretty well, its also a good bit lighter... i dont know if its down to gearing or what but the Fabia in standard form still has the upper edge.

Fair play. Never driven a vRS before, but know that a lot of people moan about understeer as standard.

As I said was just wondering if it would be worthwhile if the power could be obtained. By the sounds of it, no, its not worth bothering.

.

Same as any VAG FWD car, its nice and safe.

the handling as standard on a vRS is ****e for the power it comes with but can be improved heftily with some modification, not all are even costly. strut brace would be my first choice, i couldnt believe the difference it made then lower and stiffen the suspension. in the wet understeer is a serious issue but mostly in the dry my car handles like its on rails.

also to note a good set of tyres can make a world of difference, the standard tyres on vrs are ****e aswell.

Fair enough. Thanks for your input though.

Just you watch me try!!!!!!!!!!! I WILL supercharge my baby even if I have to chain Ross up while he does it

even if I have to chain Ross up

The 1.4TDi is basically 2/3's that of the 1.9TDi there is no reason with the usual money is no object platter that the 1.4 couldnt be as quick as the 1.9, but then again for the same money thrown at the 1.9 it would be quicker still. The problem you will face is the point where even the orginal 1.9 isnt cost worthy. 3.0TDi..... or 2.0T for a cheaper option.

I have to admit, ive been tempted to purchase my old 1.2 petrol (Ibiza) back, and throw in a new 2.0T for giggles. Would no doubt cost me a tad more than ive spent on the current car, but would be a nice sleeper :D

As for the 260bhp 1.9TDi's and wanting 300bhp stuff... I know of, as anyone with a tuned TDi should do, a guy running 430bhp+ out of his TDi ;)

Gonna say I heard of a golf tdi running silly power and a fast 1/4 time, but think he had nos to get it on boost as it was a huuuuuuuuge turbo for a derv. run like an 11sec tho dint he?

No, I believe Richard Washbrook has a Golf running 1/4 in this country?

The one you are talking about it the one I told you about, which is actually a shoe horned 1.9TDi (orginally atleast) into a Lupo running 4WD which runs 11 second 1/4 times over the water.

na man, I forget who told me about it, the guy with the golf runs daft times, but the dervs a project of his, his sub 10 car is a tomcat/bobcat(whatever) ZR apparently.
