smoke from under bonnet

Featured Replies

I have just rushed out to find what looked like white smoke coming from under the bonnet only to realise once i got the water hose over it that its a sweet oily feel/smell and is coming from somewhere between the light on drivers side and radiator area. i have called skoda assist who will be out in about 2 hours and have since run a vag com on it to find the following:

Address 08: Auto HVAC Labels: 1K0-820-047.lbl

Part No: 1Z0 820 047 D

Component: Climatic PQ35 010 0301

Shop #: WSC 00000 000 00000

1 Fault Found:

00229 - Refrigerant Pressure

002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

is this serious i.e. can it still be driven or is it now vor'd till the garage can fix it?

Sweet smell?? not plastic burning is it? Sounds very ominous mate, hope its not serious.

aircon clutch gone, and released all the AC gas?

just had rac ring me they be 20 mins so will find out then... all i need to know is can the car be driven still and if not how quick a hire car can be sorted as swmbo has no way of getting home tonight as there isnt a bus service later on :(

If it's just the aircon I don't see any problem driving it - I have no AC whatsoever in my car anymore! :D I would perhaps just not use the AC whilst you drive it. :)

Sounds like youve blown a seal on the condenser to me.......

Hope you get it sorted soon

update, he says the air con is leaking around the pressure sensor and pipe work on o/s/f area. basically the cars computer will tell it that there isnt pressure there and even if i switch on the air con (which has never been right since ive had the car) then it wont cool down the air.

He said the job will be a few days and it will involve them pressurizing it to see where its leaking from and then replacing the pipe/sensor area which will take a few days.

Best thing he said it will be warrenty so no cost to me :D

WTF were you doing with a hose?

If it was an engine bay fire, water is the very last thing you need.

at the time it was natural reaction and whilst the hose was squirting around i was in the car getting anything out that was of value to me

update has now been booked in for next monday as they are busy up to then.

The pressure sensor usually detects low refridgerant and switches off the compressor anyway.

Most Aircon refridgerants contain UV Dye, so a quick hunt around with a UV Lamp would probably show up bright green leak!

From the factory or is it added when there is a known leak? I would have thought it would be added expense to put it into every system.

that be most of the engine bay as the whole engine area is covered in a wet oily like film with sweet smell after yesterday.

That'll probably be the polyol-ester oil from the compressor, it works its way around the system. All of the R134a would have evaporated away shortly after the leak. Typical UV refrigerant dye appears as a brownish/yellowish colour on skin.

Just something i've seen on an article for regassing a old cavalier gsi some years back and automatically assumed all r134a was the same.

Wouldn't make sense to have to produce two different lots of refridgerants imo, then again im more than likely wrong, as I usually am.

funnily enough i did have brownish stains over my hands afterwards but thought it was just dirt, thinking about it now it was from whatever sprayed over me.

well ive just got the phone call, the high pressure valve has gone and now its booked in to be down on friday. had the invalid carrier this morning (roomster) and my headlights have been adjusted again, n/s/f too high (again).

Now back off to newbury to go and change cars again so not happy that by the time this is all sorted out ive had driven 100 miles in total to and from the garage.

Glad it's all getting sorted.

Is the fuel not covered in the Hire car?

Ah, the same Newbury one that never managed to adjust my xenons right first time...

Why cant VAG dealers align them correctly? Or is the car moving them, or the adjustments slipping?

I wasn't directly questioning your thoughts about it :) I was wondering whether it was put in by the OEM or is it added at the dealership when a leak is detected.

I've seen lots of products in the shops that incorporate the UV dye in with the R134a, the small cans with hoses on the end that Joe Public can spary around willy nilly :rotz:

It would seem DuPont have been knocking out UV dyed 134a for some time. The question is which OEMs use it and which do not?

hmmmm i drove home from work at no faster than 30mph as they were way too low and one lower than the other.. at the last service i was told the n/s was too high and was adjusted but both were still pointing to high and the full was adjusted for ufo hunting in the trees when the full beam were right.. guess what the full beam was fine before they fiddled with it.

Today im told the n/s (again) was too high and it had been adjusted, the full beam is slightly better but up against the garage door you can see the n/s is way too low (taken a photo to prove my point) if they could adjust my lights to be between the position it was 24 hours ago and what it is now then it be perfect.

So how did you get them to get it right first time wiebo? the guy serving me actually did listen to me more than the women that normally sit there looking pretty but f---ing dumb.
