I had similiar with Mk1 Octavia tdi for about 2 yrs, never showed up on diagnostic at Skoda dealer or VW dealer, fault only intermittent sometimes idle speed would rise rise up to 1100 slowly then fall back to indicated 850. Sometimes on starting - hot or cold- the revs would go very high - 2000 or so and immediately drop back. Also there would be a short burst of smoke whilst driving along at constant speed. The glowplug light would sometimes stay on until the engine was started - regardless of actual temperature. The "Trade" could not come up with a solution though quite willing to start changing major items at my cost, ie fuel pump, injectors, turbo blower.

I bought a new coolant sensor, fitted it, and all problems dissapeared. cost about £10 from Jorilly.com or £20 from the "trade". The sensor is a four pin device one circuit driving the dash display the other giving an input to the ecu. Hope this helps someone for a fix and not having to put up with the main dealer' Bull Feathers!!
